The door opens again to Quentin who quickly disguise himself in a magical scent of heather and steel as he curses, "Maeve's tits, your timing is awful."

There are scratches on his cheek and hands, he and Raj were sparring in Goldengreen when Toby and the Duke entered. He had been meaning to get ready to head back to Shadowed Hills, not here. That's why he's grumbling as he heads towards the counter, as long as he's here, he can wash his face.

"She's the one willing to poke her nose in and she's trusted by one person in charge. San Francisco's huge, she doesn't deal with all of it, only a small part of it."

"Of course... although your small part must have very bad luck, to have had such a succession of bad cases in it."

"They're not all in the same place and powerful people tend to attract others who want to take it from them."

"...yes, they do", Michael says regretfully. "Some more unscrupulous than others."

"Oh yes, that's why its important to have good leaders who put their people first."

"And do you have them?"

"Some, but that's true of anywhere."

"Don't I know it", he says wryly. "The police in my Chicago... unfortunately, most of them are either corrupt or in far, far over their heads because they think they're living in a mundane world. A few are neither."

"Is there a lot of overlap in your world of the mundane and not?"

He seems to be someone who lives in the place between but he also doesn't seem happy about it.

"Constant", he says with a nod. "We have four different kinds of vampire that are always in the ordinary world, for example."

"Four kinds of vampire, huh, I didn't know they even came in that many varieties,"

But then there are a lot of races of Fae in his world.

"Red, White, Black and Jade", Michael tells him. "...well, there used to be four, anyway. The Reds are gone."

"They sound like team names."

He snorts. "I guess they do. But they're bigger than your average team."

"Well, if they're a race of anything, of course they are."

"Small, as races go - they'd have to be, they're predators and predators can never outnumber the prey."

"I guess,"

Its weird to think that someone might define him as a predator though the Fae haven't been for a long time.

He was mostly talking about the vampires. The Fae are something else again.

"And then there's any number of other beings. Some of the wildfae are even helpful, if you know how to pay them. Pizza seems to be popular with the smaller ones."

"Everyone's always hungry, it makes sense that food would appeal. It must make your world crowded especially if you're aware of that other side."

Michael nods.

"Very crowded. And all too often dangerous."

"But you seem to know how to navigate it. That must help here."

He chuckles.

"It does, at that. And I never introduced myself, I'm sorry. Michael Carpenter."

"Quentin and I think I'm going to get some band aids for my scratches. It was good to talk to you,"

This feels like an appropriate moment to slip out of this conversation as he doesn't want to risk Michael figuring anything out about him.

"All right", he says easily, though there's a curious look in his eyes. "Nice to meet you, Quentin."

"You too," He says and then walks to the counter to start getting what he needs.
