Scouts - Sledging!

Just outside the forge, a collection of what appears to be junk has been laid out on a large sheet of tarpaulin. On the outside wall of the forge, and on the back door inside, a large sign has been pinned up:

Anyone who joins Milliways Scout group will get a free hoodie. Non-members also welcome.

Tiny people welcome, please see Teja. This is a supervised activity.

Potential for the following badges - Engineer - Sledge, Hand Tools, Woodwork. Possible partial completion of Power Tools.

Sledge building

There are a number of resources at participants' disposal. On the sheet of tarpaulin are many different shapes and sizes of wood, including some pieces with curved ends. There are also thin metal tubes of different sizes, which might be bent or hammered into more useful shapes.

There is also a selection of miscellaneous junk items - a couple of old deckchairs, a piece of bannister, some plastic drinks bottles, a shower curtain, a plastic baby bath, some metal grills, and various ropes.

There aren't, alas, any discarded skis (because the pile of junk came from California), but this is meant to be a challenge.

This is the thing Autor was talking about, the little girl decides, coming over. The thing with the hoodies and badges.

So there is a young Rae of Sunshine in her red coat and bright yellow scarf hovering near the work area, curious about how one puts together a sledge. It'd need a seat and runners, at least. And be sturdy enough not to fall apart, presumably.

Nearby, Fry is consulting a book with some pictures of sledges in. Perhaps that might be a help.

He already has his Scouts hoodie on, because Dad is helping.

"I think it has to have two curved bits on the bottom." he informs Rae.

Almanzo has been busy building something similar at home for hauling wood with his young oxen.

But he's not sure if the bigger boys would want him interfering, so he hovers.

Autor holds two thin plastic buckets in his hands, and sets them down in the snow near Athelstan to blow on his fingers. "How goes the search?"

And Gavroche pops out, takes one look at what's going on, and disappears again.

An hour or so later, he comes back with a sack of assorted Stuff obtained from the Sewer Folk and very, very thoroughly washed, and tips it out onto the tarpaulin.

Have at, who knows what might be in there now.

Autor digs through the junk pile with zeal, discarding a huge trash can lid on the grounds that building a sled out of one of those would be too easy. He has no idea what he's looking for, and no idea what he's doing.

"How goes your material finding?" he asks the person or people nearest him.

Sherral may have missed that this is meant to be in good fun, as he is sorting through materials with - well, military efficiency.

He's made piles based on size and suitability. It's very orderly.

Autor approaches with two thin, plastic buckets filled with lengths of wood. He sets them down in the snow near Sherral's meticulously-laid pile.

"Hmm," he says, peering over the other junk for a rope. "I do wonder which of us will be faster."

Vanellope hasn't had time to come to Milliways for a while--winter break is a busy time at Litwak's. So she's completely unaware of the whole "Milliways Scouts" thing.

But building your own vehicle from spare parts, and then racing said vehicle? She is all about that jazz.

There is now a racing game player character eying the pile of scraps speculatively. She's not used to working with parts that aren't made of candy, but...

Autor's also there, discarding lengths of rope on the basis that they're too small. He's wearing a scouts hoodie with a single Milliscouts badge on it.

"Planning to build a sled?" he asks the demon child.

There is a tween wearing a black and orange running outfit and black shoes standing at the edge of the group, wondering what is going on. His headband tied to his head, is has new fabric as well. The whiskers on his face twitched, and he was a little cold.

A 20-inch long moth hovers nearby.


Well, not a moth. She has a human looking face and the back end of what would be her abdomen are just her legs in the bottoms of a extremely puffy and fuzzy cold weather suit.

She looks confused, and her antennae are a bit twitchy. "I've never seen a human with vibrissae." She blinks a bit. "Hi, I am Fairy Fixit. Are you here to build a sledge?"

Enzo joins the party rather late; probably too late, he thinks with regret, to have something viable by race time. When he sees the Sandhu kids taking part, though, he concludes that that's probably just as well if it's to be at all fair. There aren't really enough of them for age divisions.

Just putting a working vehicle together looks like the greater challenge anyway. He contemplates the materials still available.

Guppy is keeping half an eye on his oldest, but he has the three younger children over here making a Tiny Person sledge.

He is not known for his DIY skills.

"Excuse me," she says, politely. "Are you Bonnie? I was told I could get one of those hoodies for the badges from you."

Following a brief conversation with Autor, Vanellope approaches the woman that he had identified as 'Bonnie.'

"So what've I gotta do to start this 'Milliscouts' side-quest thing?"

The sign inside is tempting her to go outside.

But outside is so cold! And occasionally breezy!

...

Eventually, Fairy Fixit flies out to Bonnie and the commotion outside, wearing a one piece cold weather suit so puffy and fuzzy that she looks like an actual moth. Well, a giant 20-inch long moth with human face.

"Hi Bonnie! I hope I am not too late for the judging of the sledges. Is there going to be judging? I can help with that," Fixit says, hovering near Bonnie.
