About 4 days after this Death sat at a table looking over a menu, it wasn't like he needed one. He was wearing his usual suit but instead of his cane a small scythe laid on the table. He might offer dinner to someone who sits with him.

"I have been well," he said, "Please sit."
He offered the menu to Jay.

He looks it over. "Mind you, that steak sounds nice! I could probably do with some red meat."

Death smiled, "How are you?"

"I'm... better than I was. It's been an eventful Christmas. More than I'd like."

Specifically, he comes to Death's table today, and looks at him, head tilted in question like an auger of curiosity.
"Hello, Death," he says. "Care to tell me what that scene in the stacks was all about?"
no subject
He figured this human deserved most of the truth about what happened.

The wait wouldn't be long for their orders, but he didn't think that explanations over an empty table would be fitting.
"Ava," said Death, "is a soul from my world. And when she was alive, she did some very bad things."

After a heartbeat hesitation, she crosses towards his table, taking him in: suit, scythe, menu.
"You busy?"
no subject
"Sit," he said brandishing the menu at her.
Death owed her an explanation.
no subject
Slowly, she sits down.
no subject
He said this in passing, as if it were totally normal.
no subject
A pause.
"How was that?"

"Did you learn anything?" asked Death. There was also a small box on the table, it just was suddenly. He pushed it over to Jack. It was a holiday box complete with a bow and a tag with Jack's name on it.

He looks at the box and beams.
"Why thank you! I'm afraid all of mine were confiscated or escaped."
He opens it.

"That is fine," said Death, "What about not kidnapping people?"
