Fry has been on half term this week, which has given him plenty of time with his chicken duties.

He'd been having some difficulty naming the chick, so Dad told him to name it after something he likes, which is why the chick is now called 'Fractions' and is marked with one small green and three small blue dots.

He isn't allowed to handle the chick without Dad or Rae being present, so at the moment he is in the stables watching the chicks, and helping measure the chicken feed into bags of the right size. But he has not, alas, accounted for the fact that the chicks will be getting bigger over the next few weeks.

William notices Fry as he does the chores in the stable and once they're done, sits down at a bench near the chicks with his coffee.

Today he's rather bruised and its good to see Fry being careful, "They're lookin' healthy."

"Yes." Fry says. "I weighed Fractions the other day and plotted his growth on a graph. He is growing well."

He glances at the bruises but doesn't comment.

None of the bruises are awful, the product of being bumped around by cattle and horses,

"That's good. This seems like a nice spot for 'em."

"If you're here can I pick up my chick?" Fry asks.

"Course you can," He knows that Fry's careful.

Fry climbs into the pen. He is careful in nature, but he does have a certain amount of physical clumsiness, which is why Dad didn't exempt him from the 'under eight supervised' rule.

He is extra careful to sit on the floor before he picks up Fractions. The chick appears to be used to being handled.

William doesn't stand up since from his seat he can see well enough and sips his coffee.

"We aren't going to eat him, are we?" Fry asks anxiously after a moment. "Dad says that we can't take him home at the end because of Muum's allergies."

"I don't know. You'd have to ask Bonnie about that,"

Eating is usually what happens to chickens unless they're egg layers but he's not in charge of them.

"I like Bonnie." Fry says. "And I like chicken. But I would feel bad eating one that had a name."

"Yeah, that's why most folks don't name their chickens."

"Bonnie did." Fry says. "So maybe they're safe."

"You'll have to ask her, but they probably are."

"On Mondays we have vegetablearian food." Fry says.

"Alright,"

He's not sure how else to react to that, the times when he's only eaten vegetables was because that was what there was.

"Do chickens wee and poo or do they just poo?" Fry asks, with the quick change of topic that small people tend to have.

"Both though its all pretty small."

Fractions decides to have a little wiggle, and reaches up to flap his wings. Fry jumps, but doesn't drop him.

"He might want you to put him down soon, might try petting him."

"There there." Fry tries, patting the chick on the head. The chick flutters and jumps off his knee.

"Aw, it didn't work."

"Chicks aren't like kittens, they don't always like being held."

"Neither do kittens." Fry says. "Maybe he just had enough."

"Yeah and he was trying to see if he could fly."

"Brooklyn tries that sometimes. She's not very good." Fry says.

"How old is she now?"

"Two and a half." Fry says. "She has to go to my school after half term because she got excluded from nursery for leading a mass escape."

"How far did she get and was it that bad?"

Nurseries aren't common in is time so he doesn't know what it might be like.

"End of the car park. She should have made less noise, when I escaped from nursery at her age I got half a mile."

"She'll know better now and hopefully she'll be in a place she doesn't want to run away from."

"Yeah, she was bored there." Fry says. "It's better being at school."

"Yeah, lots to keep you busy."
