Bonnie found a card tucked into under her table mat at breakfast this morning, which she has currently at the bar, with a bottle of Dinkel-Radler shandy, which she has discovered is tasty enough to consider taking a crate home.

The picture on the front is done comic book style, and shows a recognisable caricature of her leaping her motorbike over a giant chasm onto some cowering villains.

Both of her boys have signed it, but the artist (Ted) is not yet out of bed for her to thank him too. At the moment she is looking at it, touched by the sentiment, and wondering whether the lad could make much money as a comic book artist.

"Ms. Bonnie?" Gyda still as her sleeveless hoodie over her t-shirt. "How do you decide on badges?"

Her talk with Athelstan and her father left her with some ideas, but that meant talking with Ms. Bonnie.

Bonnie looks up and smiles.

"To do, or to make?" she asks. "And technically it's Mrs, but just Bonnie is fine."

No one actually ever told her the difference, but she heard something like the address and assumed it was a universal way of showing respect. "To make. I was looking on the lists with Athelstan and father and there's nothing on swimming."

She'd found something on 'boats', but it had to do with piracy. A long search found that piracy was almost like raiding, but that was a topic for later.

The piracy badge doesn't contain any raiding or violence and acknowledges at the start that actual piracy does. Some sort of Viking culture badge on a similar theme (e.g. using the weaving, knowing about boats etc) would be entirely workable and Gyda would be fully encouraged to construct one.

"Oh sure." Bonnie nods. "You mostly have to set a series of tasks or a choice of tasks. Do you want to make it yerself or do you want to do it together?"

"I'd like to do it together, but father is with my half brothers and Athelstan can't always make it to a door." Least that's what she got from their conversation. "I do know I'll need them."

They didn't have this back home after all.

"Can you swim already?" Bonnie asks.

[like_quicksilver]

"Not really." She looks away, a little embarressed at this. "I can wade a little, but not swim properly." Not like Athelstan, but better than Floki, so that was something.

"Okay, so this is gonna have to be a real beginners badge." Bonnie says. "Or one with levels."

[like_quicksilver]

"Maybe one with levels." Just because she couldn't swim all that well didn't mean others. "Athelstan's a member, too, right? He's a better swimmer than I am."

"Where are you learnin' to swim?"

[like_quicksilver]

"I learned to swim a little back home." Mother was teaching her to fish for eels and she needed to learn a little back home. "And the lake here is good."

"I think there's a mermaid or a shark in there, so we'd need to do the badge in a safe spot."

[like_quicksilver]

"What's a mermaid?" She caught the maid part of the word, but otherwise she wasn't sure what creature it could be. "There should be a safe spot roped up, right?"

"A half woman half fish who eats people."

[like_quicksilver]

"And she lives here?" Why not, there was a dragon here too. "Does she talk, or is she a creature who can't speak?"

Somewhere in the conversation, she'd taken a seat down. "Is there a safer place to swim? It could be roped up."

"I'll try and find out." Bonnie says. "If you try and find out too, then one of us should win. I've not met her so I don't know if she talks. If there's nowhere safe to swim, maybe we can set up one of those portable pools."

"What should I look for..or not look for?" If she was looking for a safe place to swim, she wanted to know what to look for besides smooth waters. "And what do I win if I find it?"

Bonnie considers this.

"Well, maybe that's fer you to decide." she says. "I like my scouts to be independent. You could research what makes a swim area safe, and ask the others here about the mermaid, and report back. And what you win is gettin' to make the badge, though I might dish out an Independent Thought badge if you do a good job. If you're findin' it hard, maybe rope in yer patrol leader."
