There is a note for Security in the Office, written in an old-fashioned hand.

Recently, it came to my attention that two warriors of my acquaintance have found themselves guests of Milliways. As I was previously unfamiliar with this realm, I was compelled to investigate, to ensure both their safety and the safety of my version of Earthrealm. I have learned of the work you do, of its importance, and of the threats and everyday duties you face.

I believe I can help you to ensure that this realm remains neutral, peaceful, and lawful by joining your number. As my universe's God of Thunder and sworn defender of Earthrealm, my powers are considerable. Because time is no object in this realm, I can perform the duties of this position without neglecting my existing ones, as well as inform you of any interdimensional threats from my own universe that may arise.

I have spoken to Melaka Fray about this, and she has seen fit to allow it. She has deemed it appropriate - and I agree - that I speak to as many of you as possible before I begin. It shall be an honor to serve among you.

"Hello," X says, slipping into a seat at the table across from the Thunder God.

"Raiden."

Raiden nods.

"X. Well met."

He opens his palm to reveal a badge.

"It seems we are now comrades."

X looks at the badge, gaze flicking from it to Raiden's face and back.

"I think it will not be terrible."

Beat.

"You are good at not traumatizing people? Even when you are angry. At them."

Raiden's brow furrows.

"I have not been known to lose my temper."

He clearly doesn't quite understand the question.

A faint tension in her shoulders eases.

"That is probably good."

Understatement.

"Sometimes people are very stupid. When they choose to get into fights. Here."

"Belligerence is seldom accompanied by prudence."

"No."

X does not sigh.

"It is frustrating. Sometimes."

"And it never seems to cease," Raiden says.

"But individual mortals can grow wiser."

"Groups can, too," X says. Carefully.

"Sometimes it takes longer."

[thunderbasedgod]

"That it does," Raiden says.

"Do you have any insights of the other members of the team? Melaka Fray has given me their names, but I know little else."

"Most of them are competent. Gene and Teja have tempers. They are also biased. Sometimes."

She shrugs, one-shouldered and quick.

"Santo wears a mask. He is very kind. And he tries to be fair. Thor does, too. He also has a temper. But he knows that is not good."

X: always the best at descriptions. And explaining.

Raiden nods.

"A varied lot, then. I shall be interested to meet this Thor. I have, at times, been called by that name."

"Sometimes people are easily confused."

Bewildered, even. Or so it would seem.

"Many peoples of Earthrealm have tales of thunder gods," Raiden says.

"Raiden is but one of their names."

"Oh."

She frowns, very slightly.

"You do not have your own? Name."

Some people don't. She remembers.

"'Raiden' has served me well for a long time," he says.

"The people of Japan are the only ones who seem to know it. And even they have others. Some of the Earth legends contain more of myself than others."

"It is like that for stories here, too."

"I should think so," Raiden says, "given an infinity of universes."

X shrugs, one-shouldered and quick.

"Some people are surprised."

With newcomers it is kind of understandable. Everyone else . . .

"It is a humbling thing to consider."

X tilts her head, studying him quietly for a second or two.

"Why?"

[thunderbasedgod]

"I had believed I knew every realm," Raiden says. "I knew them all well, and as a god was equipped to deal with all of them. Now I see the truth of a reality that dwarfs me. A truth mortals know which I did not."

"Oh."

Beat.

"But you are learning."

He is learning, right?

"That is good."

"Wisdom is preferable to comfortable ignorance."

[cutting_edgex23]

"Some people do not think that."

It is annoying.

[thunderbasedgod]

"No," Raiden says. "They do not. The loss is theirs."

Raiden likes X. She conducts herself with the appropriate amount of gravity.

"Sometimes," X agrees.

"Except when they make trouble for other people."

Then it is everyone's problem.

Or, you know. Security's.

"That, too, shall be their loss."

A pause, to ensure he is understood.

"Unless they enjoy the confines of a cell."

"Sometimes people dislike washing dishes more. Or mucking out the stables."

She does not smile, but someone else might.

"That can be relevant."

Raiden smiles, kinda. Someone else might smile more.

"That it can. There are many tasks to set before idle hands."

"It will be good if you remember. That."

X really, really means it.

And she is not displeased.

Here, Raiden truly smiles.

"I know well to exercise the full breadth of my authority. As is...appropriate."

"I am not terrible. At that," X agrees.

They have an accord.

"No," Raiden says. "You most certainly are not."
