[oom: The case of the Baguette Bandit: Case Closed. Minor violence warning.]

There's nothing quite like closing your first case, and tonight Lance-Constable Fiddyment has his armour off and is having a well-earned evening off.

He also got his first paycheck today, and is celebrating it by coming to the bar to buy a cheeseburger with named meat in it, and chips, and this strange pink drink that Bar thought he would like.

There's enough chips to share if anyone wants to join him.

A stray chip has fallen off the plate and onto the bar. A raven glides down from the rafters to rescue said chip. It's a perfectly normal looking raven except for the jewel encrusted gold band around one leg.

He caws an appreciative sound.

[auxin]

Auxin jumps, and looks at the raven curiously.

He then passes it another chip.

[intoaman]

The raven croaks an apology for startling him and accepts another chip gratefully.

As an afterthought, he raps gently on the bar. The bar seems to understand and produces a small pot of thick brown gravy that the raven then decorously dips the chip in before eating.

[auxin]

"Huh, good idea."

Auxin dips his own chip in.

"So you're some sort of superbird."

[intoaman]

He caws softly and cocks his head, wondering how to explain. Without the most obvious method.

He shrugs and goes with that. He flies up into the rafters.

A moment later a pale and heavily scarred young man drops down from the rafters, the same gold band around his ankle. "Hello, sorry. I like being in raven shape better but it's hard to talk. I'm Diaval. Thank you for sharing your chips."

[auxin]

"Oh!" Auxin nearly jumps again in surprise. "I didn't know ravens could do that. Hi Diaval, I'm Auxin."

[intoaman]

"Sorry!" He grins sheepishly. "They can't. As far as I know, I'm the only one who can."

[auxin]

"What about your family?" Auxin asks. "Can they shift too?"

[intoaman]

"I don't have any family. Just me. I was made like this by a powerful fae. I can only change here because I have this." He points to the gold band around his ankle.

[auxin]

"Oh, that must be tough." Auxin looks at the band. "So you can't change at home?"

[intoaman]

He shakes his head. "And she can't know about this place, of that I can shift here. She wouldn't like it at all."

[auxin]

"I guess everyone here keeps it a secret..." Auxin nods. "Does she keep you prisoner?"

[intoaman]

"I serve her. She saved my life, I owe her that." He tilts his head.

[a1enzo]

"Hey, man. Looks like you got used to the place."

[auxin]

"Hey Enzo. Yeah, I think so." Auxin grins. "Bar gave me this pink stuff."

[a1enzo]

"Looks like a strawberry milkshake."

[auxin]

"It does taste like strawberry, and milk." Auxin agrees. "We don't have this at home though."

[a1enzo]

"That's a shame. Where is home for you?"

[auxin]

"Ankh-morpork, on the Disc. How about you?"

[a1enzo]

"Oh, that world! I've met people from there before. Um. My world is probably going to be really hard to explain. I'm willing to try, just, y'know, warning you."

[auxin]

"If you won't be offended if I don't get it, go for it."

[a1enzo]

"That's fine. Okay, um... my world is the... what's the right word... the manifestation on another place of existence of the operations of a kind of calculating machine made and used by humans on Earth."

[auxin]

"You live in an abacus? Or a disorganiser?"

[a1enzo]

"A computer is way more complicated than an abacus, but that's kind of the right idea. I don't know what that other one is."

[auxin]

"It's a box with an imp in it."
