Jay wanders in from his door looking comfortingly rough - cut off shorts, no shirt, no shoes and a week's worth of stubble.

He grabs a shaving kit and a straight razor from the bar and vanishes into the bathroom, reemerging a few minutes later looking clean and content.

You can finally him sitting on the back step with a bottle of beer, cleaning and sharpening the razor.

"The vice president is in no state to take over." Bonnie says. "The only person to come forward is a guy called Picket, but a lot of the bikers want Turtle to stand. Turtle says if he stands, if he wins, he's imposin' a four drink limit on all outings."

Jay chuckles. "I don't imagine that policy went down well?"

"The bikers are very divided." Bonnie says. "He made an impassioned speech about the fact that half the group will be dead if we carry on the way we were, and a lot of folks agreed with him. The rest were real angry."

"And the other guy? Picket? He's more popular with the wilder half of the crowd?"

He rocks Billie Rae against his chest, happy to hold her while she's happy to be held.

"I wouldn't say he's popular." Bonnie says, as Billie snuggles up to Jay. "So much as his views are. Picket ain't really leader material."

"Is it better to step back and let the gang sort themselves out or stay involved?"

"We were tryin' to, until Turtle kept gettin' put under pressure to stand." Bonnie says. "A new baby was excuse enough."

She sighs. "If Picket wants to put even more emphasis on all-night drinkin', it may be time for us to leave the gang."

Jay nods. "Let me know if I can help, okay?"

"Thanks. What would you do?"

Jay shrugs. "I don't know. Money, support. Beat the shit out of someone, if needed." He's joking. Mostly.

She barks a little laugh. "I meant if you were me, not that I don't appreciate the offer."

"Oh right." Jay gives a sheepish grin. "I'm not much a follower so I'd get out on my own and let them sort themselves out but I get that they're your people so that might not be so easy."

"Yeah. I mean, I earned my place among them, it took an awful long time." Bonnie says. "They've been part of my family."

Jay nods. "Make sense. I guess you'd hope the ones who matter would stay family even if you step back a bit and don't get involved in the heavy drinking and such."

"I think they would." Bonnie says. "They've been pretty worried about me over the last few years, and even when I stopped hangin' around so much they would come check on me."

"Then if I was you, I'd step back a bit. The people who matter will stick with you and you don't get sucked into the gangs politics."

"Going to be hard if my husband is the president." Bonnie sighs.

"You make a good point. What does Turtle think?"

"He was tryin' not to get involved, but when only Picket decided to stand, he felt he ought to do somethin'."

"Then I guess it's a conversation better had with him."

The little girl in his arms starts to grizzle and Jay rocks her gently.

"Yeah, I'll talk to him when we get home." Bonnie says. "Not that we interfere in what each other are doin', as a rule, but he wouldn't want to put all of us at risk."

"And you're a family now. Means you gotta be aware of each other. Even if you're not looking to interfere."

Billie moves to full cry now and Jay offers to hand her back.

"Aw, come here squishy-face." Bonnie takes the baby back for a cuddle.

"Turtle's a cop, I'm sure he'll be okay, but I'll talk to him."

"Squishy-face?" Jay chuckles. "She's going to take some growing into that one."

"Eh, by then her face won't be squishy." Bonnie says, tickling the little one on the nose.

The mun looks forward to the day that mun's friend's child learns that for the first year of his life we referred to him as 'Stinky'.
