"I wandered out as I came in," she says. "No time to prepare a costume, stumbled right into the party."

"Oh--"

His gaze then falls on her badge.

"Oh."

His eyebrows shoot up (masked as they are with sequins and paint). But that's okay. He's known quite a few jailbirds back home.

"Well, that must have been quite the surprise!" he chuckles.

He offers her the pumpkin-shaped bucket. "Would you care for a glowy trinket?"

"Absolutely," she says. "It's positively de rigeur."

She takes a bracelet.

"I must admit that at first, I thought I had lost my mind. But even if this is a hallucination, it's quite welcome."

"Ah, the more often you come here, the more you may find that this place will become a haven, figment of your imagination or not -- which it is not, I assure you, by the way," he adds with a wink.

"Please, do call me Emcee."

"Delighted to meet you, Alex," he says with a grin as he lets the techno-pop beat move him. "And welcome to the Halloween party at Milliways! Is there something you'd like to dance to? I know the DJ and he takes requests."

The way he says this implies that he knows the DJ in more ways than one.

"This is so nineties," Alex says. "I love it. Can he play 'Crucified' to complete the theme?"

Emcee has no concrete idea of what 'nineties' music is like, although he has sampled some music from the era. But he nevertheless smiles at her request.

"I shall go tell him," he says, before shimmying and sashaying over to Jay. They exchange a few words and nods. Then as Emcee returns to Alex, the current song fades and "Crucified" by Army of Lovers comes on.

"Is this it?"

He's already dancing to it. (He would love the music video.)

"It is!" she says. "For me, the most nineties song ever."

She is dancing to it, too. Enthusiastically.

Emcee laughs brightly, pulling off some moves that could very well come out of this song's music video.

"Alas, I have not experienced the 'nineties,'" he says, but doesn't mention that he isn't certain if he ever will. "Is it the era that you are from? --And has anyone told you already that people come here from different time periods and worlds?"

"No, and no," she says. "I was still a teenager, but a lot of fun. At the end, people got terribly scared of the millennium, though."

She dances in kind; prison khakis or not, Alex likes a party.

"Oh! Well, I readd that many people thought the turning of the century to the year 1900 meant that doomsday was coming," he chuckles.

"If your most enjoyable years were the nineties, then mine were the twenties. Those years are past, however, but I have wonderful memories of them."

"The roaring twenties, as they're called now?" she says, with a laugh. "Charleston, flappers, jazz clubs, the lot?"

"Yes, exactly! Is that what they're called? It's only 1934 now, so I don't think society is far enough removed to give the decade a name yet."

He braces himself for questions, though. People from similar worlds with similar histories tend to become curious. Or concerned.

She doesn't ask where he is from.

She might figure it out anyway by his accent.

"This place is indeed a marvelous escape," he agrees with a smile. "After all, there is nowhere else I can hear all this wonderful music from the nineties."

"What's the most current hit songs when you're from?"

That sentence decidedly sounds odd.

Something passes over his face, and he utters a bit of a rueful chuckle.

"Nothing that would suit a dance party like this," he says. "But anything that I would consider a 'hit' is from a couple years ago--before the ban on jazz."

A ban on jazz might sound odd as well.

Then it hits her.

Literally and figuratively dancing at the end of the world.
