Out in the garden, at the edge of the forest, a small boy is busy gathering blackberries.
Blackberry plants grow a foot a week in summer. However many people pick, or birds eat, there's nearly always some left over, and Almanzo is very good at hunting down berries.
So, armed with a huge basket, he's been picking the stragglers on each bush, before they go manky or get damaged by the frost. His fingers are stained purple, and his chin, and it's really quite possible that he is eating almost as many as he is putting in the basket.
