Happy Hour

When William comes in from the back, he's shaking off his hat, the storm from last night hasn't fully left. All he wants is to get something warm, when Bar asks him to bartend and he starts by getting a big bowl of chili and some cornbread along with coffee as he sets up the specials.

Beer
Free hot drink if you're coughing.

Then he digs into his food and looks around, he's hearing a lot of sneezing and coughing which is never a good sign.

(OOC: I'll be sleeping soon, but this is open until either it scrolls or another happy hour goes up. Use this as a place to share the IMDB flu and sow confusion.)

After William has had a good amount of time to settle into his Happy Hour shift, a person of ambiguous gender approaches. Dressed in a military looking uniform and sniffling a little, they take an extra minute to read the sign before ordering.

"How is the whiskey? I have never had it before."

The military uniform has William sitting a little taller, "Its pretty strong but can be good if you need warmin' up."

Izana sighs and looks to the room.

"I do not think I need warming, it seems hot enough in here already. Do you know if there's something wrong with the atmosphere?"

Though would explain why people are coughing and such.

"What do you mean the atmosphere?" Milliways is seeming pretty nice today other than everyone being sick. When he thinks of atmosphere, he considers it the feel of a room not the air.

Izana pauses to think how best to articulate what they mean.

"The quality of the air and its temperature. As I mentioned, it feels warmer than usual in here and I noticed people are reacting as if there were irritants present, like pollen or fumes."

Which could be why their nose is producing extra mucus.

"Oh, no, they're sick probably with a cold or a flu. Don't folks get sick where you're from?"

Izana turns back to William.

"I don't believe so. If I understand your words correctly. People can become ill by exposure to chemicals and the like, but I think you mean something else, yes?"

He's not sure what this patron, who he thinks might be a girl means by chemicals, "Yeah, there are diseases that move around and some of 'em end up in here. I know the infirmary tries but everyone gets sick."

Izana pauses again to think of how his words might mean; Japanese (the language Izana is hearing) can be a subtle language with words meaning different things at different times, or even having several layered meanings. Eventually, they decide the word he uses, diseases, means a living organism that invades a larger one and causes a change in how the larger organism functions.

This growing realization is likely being telegraphed on Izana's face as the gross nature of the concept becomes clear.

"Do you mean organisms are in our bodies now?!?! And causing this illness?"

Germ theory is new in William's time and he's read about disease but he's not a scientist,

"Um, no, it ain't like a worm wigglin' in you. I don't know, its not that awful, a doctor would know better."

"I should visit the infirmary. If this is true, I cannot bring this disease back to Sidonia!"

"If you're sick, Bar usually won't let you leave to keep everyone safe."

[garde723]

"Oh that is very good news." Then, as they realize they haven't even introduced themself, Izana adds, "And I am being rude, I do hope you can forgive me. I am Izana, Shinatose Izana."

[not_his_pa]

"Yes, you can try your door, it probably won't work. My name's William Evans, its nice to meet you."

[garde723]

"Please excuse me again, do you prefer William or Evans?" Both seem equally strange to them and Izana has no idea which would be a family name and which a given.

"I usually go by William."

[garde723]

"Thank you," Izana replies brightly. "I've noticed different people present their names differently, so I like to make sure I am being proper."

They pause for a slight cough and sniffle. "Perhaps I will try the whiskey after all. Please."

[not_his_pa]

"Oh yeah, I'm never sure what's polite and sometimes do too much. I'll give you a little bit as its alcoholic and hits some folks more than others," He pours her out a small glass.
