The circle of chairs is... not in the bar today, instead there's a sign.

Out on the beach, there is a circle of deckchairs. It's too nice weather today to waste inside. There's also a yummy picnic, and a thermos of tea.

"Bar takes care of her patrons," Alana says, shrugging. "You can be horrified by it. Or you can accept it as just one the many strange things around here."

"Well, if she's going to provide wine, that's fine. If she's going to start giving me stealth tetanus shots we'll be having words."

Alana shakes her head. "She won't go that far. She'll remind you to eat, and usually that's the end of it. She might put you in a costume, though--she's got a sense of humor."

"Okay."

He leans over and says clearly to the counter.

"I'm allergic to vegetables."

Great, now he feels stupid.

Alana chuckles. "She knows what you're really.allergic to. And she'll celebrate your birthday, too. Most people get a cupcake from her."

"It's my birthday." Bernard tells Bar. Nothing appears.

"How does she know?"

"No one knows," Alana says, not unkindly. "The easiest explanation is magic. Do you have magic in your world?"

"Not real magic." Bernard says. "People who dress up and pretend, yes."

"That sounds like my Earth," Alana says, nodding thoughtfully. "At least, I assume you're from an Earth. People come through the door from all different times and places, and time stops for you at home once you enter the bar. It's 2013 for me now. What year is it for you?"

"Earlier." Bernard says.

"This is bizarre. And yes, Earth. Where else would I be from?"

"A lot of people who come here haven't ever heard of Earth," Alana says patiently. "They come from all manner of different worlds, some with magic and some that seem like they're from a science fiction novel."

"What like, Narnia?"

Alana furrows her brow. "Well, I haven't personally met anyone from Narnia, but all universes exist here, so it's a possibility."

Bollocks, she's making it up.

"I haven't ruled out that this is all just Candid Camera yet." Bernard admits.

"That would be a rather elaborate prank," Alana says, smiling at him again. "Don't worry, you'll soon meet an alien or something."

"Well you've been very nice, thank you." Bernard says, genuinely. Most people are not nice to him, or if they are, he is revolting in return.

He gets wine from the bar and offers her a glass.

"Why, thank you, Bernard," Alana says, accepting the glass. "It has been a pleasure to introduce you to the bar. I hope you find your feet soon."
