It came to Bonnie's attention recently, while she was helping supply pie for Life Support, that some folks around here are short of food.

So, today, she has set up a table on one side of the bar, with another large baking of pies, plus some of her spare apples, and some jars of jams and pickles. She carefully covers the pies to stop any errant flies buzzing over them.

She sets up a sign behind the table.

'HARVEST FESTIVAL

Are you a keen gardener who would like to trade one food for another?

Do you have a lot of spare food that will otherwise go to waste?

Are you someone who just needs no excuse to bake?

TAKE WHAT YOU NEED

Trade crops and avoid waste. If you are hungry, if you are short of food, please, help yourself. No eligibility questions asked. Any spare food at the end will be given to the bar to be distributed later to those who are hungry.

Suggested items: Fruit and veg, baked goods, dried goods, canned goods
Please no: Out of date food, foods that need to be kept hot or cold, items inedible to humans (or at very least please label as such), magic prank food, blood products or products made from humans, medicines, junk.'

There are takeaway boxes and bowls and spoons provided.

"He came later. More than a month after I arrived." He looks down at his wrists, moving to cover the scars. "I'd... I'd given up hoping."

"I am so sorry," Dorian says. "This place can be cruel. But at least, he came in the end!"

"Thank you." He strokes Myrrh, looking up with a sigh. "And now we have this." He gestures to the rooms. "A life we could never have hoped for."

"I am so very glad for you," Dorian says. "Are you married? Is that possible where you are from?"

That stops Bodhi dead. He's never thought of marrying Galen. Never thought it might even be possible.

"Under the Empire, no. But here? I don't know. I never- He was married before. I'm not even sure he'd- He'd want to. Lyra was... He loved her very much."

"Isn't it possible in space for two men to marry?" Dorian says. "I'm sure there are aliens out there where there is only one sex, or on the other hand half a dozen. One man, one woman probably doesn't work for them, either."

"It would be, outside the Empire. They weren't keen on people who were different. Or aliens. But yes, there are lots of races that have more than two sexes, or none at all."

"Sounds a lot like our Empire," Dorian nods.

He cocks his head. "Are there people working to be free of your Empire? The way we did."

"Of course," Dorian says. "In the colonies. Who likes to be ruled by strangers and have no rights? Me neither."

"It's sad to think it's like that in so many worlds."

"People and their empires," Dorian shrugs. "Absolute power corrupts absolutely."

"I hope you find freedom." Bodhi says softly.

{ooc: shall we fade there? Or send Galen to interrupt them?"

At that moment, the door opens and Galen walks in, carrying a bag of kitty litter and a thermos of fresh caf.

Bodhi looks up with a bright smile. "Galen. This is Dorian. He lives under an empire too. I was showing him holo-vids."

"You are Galen?" Dorian says, getting up and offering his hand. He had somehow expected somebody younger and more attractive to be with pretty Bodhi. "So nice to meet you! You're from an interesting world. Bodhi has shown me so much."

"Here, let me help you with that." He bounces to his feet to take the bag of kitty litter. He's getting over his thing about public displays of affection and brushes a kiss over Galen's cheek.

Galen hugs him, almost possessively, then shakes Dorian's hand. "I've got enough caf for three. We can always use more friends here."

The possessiveness surprises Bodhi but he doesn't say anything. Instead ducks off to put the kitty litter away. "Caf is a bit like Earth coffee only stronger and less bitter."

"I will be honoured to be your friend, then," Dorian says. They are so couple-y! "And glad to share some of that caf before I need to go."

"We have sweetener if it's still too bitter for you." He fetches three mugs down from a shelf. "I find it goes well with chocolate."

Galen turns to the kitchenette and gets out a plate of Bodhi's fruit and spice cookies. "And with these, of course."

He is going to be nice and hospitable and get all ideas about how pretty Bodhi is out of that smiling stranger's mind.

"Oh, that batch is good. I've been toying with spices from different places. I like Earth cinnamon."

Dorian accepts a mug of caf and a cookie, and sits down again.

Well, he can do a little mischief yet.

"These are excellent," he says. "You really should get married -- you are so comfortably domestic together."

Bodhi blushes, deeply, right down to the hollow of his throat. He glances at Galen, then the floor, biting his lip.
