Translation fail

When Cassian comes in, he only pauses for a moment as he sees he's entered Milliways and not where he was expecting. He loosens the collar of his leather jacket and heads to the counter with a slight limp. This is a decent moment for a break and he asks Bar for one of the poetry books from the library and a caf.

When the book appears, he stares down at it and frowns as he can't make sense of it. He looks around to see if anyone else seems confused.

Jay comes up from the garage, giving Cassian a wave and speaking American English. "Hey Cassian. How'd Kay enjoy his first time at the bar?"

Cassian responds in Basic, "He liked it. Is something going on with the translation spell?"

Jay frowns, confused by the odd syntax and accent of Cassian's words. "The translation spell? It's screwing up somehow."

[childofrebellion]

"I know, but let me test something," He sets a book of poetry by Pablo Neruda in Spanish on the counter and from the bag at his side pulls out his datapad and opens it to a page of specs, "Can you read either of these?"

Jay looks them both over, shaking his head. "I can follow the schematics but not the words."

"And I can't read that," He says while he taps the book in Spanish, "Has this ever happened before?"

"Not that I know of." He looks closer at the book of poetry, focusing. "I can read parts of this. My Spanish isn't all that great but fault's on me for that."

"Spanish is similar to Festian, the language I grew up speaking. Normally I can read that but now I don't know the alphabet. Do you know how the translation works?"

"No idea." Jay shrugs. "I've never tried to work it out. Seems like it's stopped working."

"Yes, it changes the feel of Milliways," In someways its more like the cantinas he knows with all the languages.

[runningred]

"Better or worse?"

[childofrebellion]

"I don't know yet."

[runningred]

Jay chuckles and nods. "Your world has a lot of different languages?"

[childofrebellion]

"Yes, every planet and system has their own languages and then various dialects as well."

[runningred]

"But there's a core language? Something enough people speak to get around?"

[childofrebellion]

"Basic, almost everyone knows some of it."

[runningred]

"And it sounds enough like English. Just like Spanish is similar to Festian. Hmm. Parallel evolution or universe bleed?" He muses, half to himself.

[childofrebellion]

"I have no idea, but its useful. And Milliways might be helping with whatever similarities even with whatever causes the translation not working,"

Language is something he knows about but its never held his interest the way that flying has. He's never wanted to know how and why it works other than how to use it in codes or slicing.
