Translation fail at your discretion

The trip to the beach was a success, give or take Futaba attempting to take on the beach with a towel entirely wrapped around her head, Ryuji deciding hitting on girls was necessary for some reason, and Yusuke's utter failure to get his lobsters home alive. How unfortunate - they were truly beautiful specimens, and he'd been hoping to get some drawings from life in before they perished.

In any case, school resumes for the fall tomorrow, and the school field trip to Los Angeles is fast approaching. The good news is that Yusuke already has a valid passport, one of a very few things he can properly thank Madarame for. The bad news? He has absolutely no idea what to pack.

Oh well. He has around a week to figure that out, and for now, the bar is a welcome distraction.

(OOC: Yusuke is fluent in Japanese, passably proficient in English, better at reading French than speaking it, and has the barest smattering of Italian and Latin, the last three of which are all thanks to his art background.)

The language problem is reminding Cassian of when he was younger and getting more comfortable using Basic instead of Festian.

He's doing some work on his datapad and listening, trying to understand words and made sense of various accents. When he sees Yusuke, he comes over and says in Basic, "[Hello.]"

"Ah, hello. How have you been?"

Unfortunately for the start of this conversation, Yusuke hasn't taken note of the translation difficulties at all, yet. Eventually it'll sink in that he heard that in English, but he's definitely replying in Japanese.

Cassian blinks as he hears a language he doesn't know, "[I'm sorry, I didn't understand you.]"

Yusuke frowns. "You didn't? Odd." And then he takes a moment to think through the discussion so far, such as it is, and switches to English.

"My apologies. I hadn't realised there were... problems."

"They're new," He can understand Yusuke now though he has to pay more attention.

Well, at least they're in the same boat there. The joys of second languages.

"Has anyone worked out the cause yet?"

"Not that I've spoken with," It would be nice to know why this is happening.

"It would be easier if we knew what was translating to begin with, but I honstly hadn't realised something was doing so." It's obvious, now that he thinks about it. A bar with multiversal patrons couldn't possibly only be drawing in Japanese speakers.

"Its one of those questions that I kept meaning to ask but never knew the right person,"

He was happy to be understood and Basic is the language of the galaxy.

"And now that we need to know, it's much more difficult to find out."

At least they can enjoy the irony? Or something.

"It is. I'm glad that Basic seems to be similar to an Earth language," Its not easy but it does make conversation possible.

"It isn't English? You could have fooled me."

[childofrebellion]

"No, its Galactic Basic, the main language of the Empire."

[dwellsinthedetails]

"At least they're close enough for us to be... at a similar loss."

Yusuke looks displeased, but it's with his available word choice - he can't be half so eloquent in English, not yet. That just doesn't sound as impressive as 'equally disadvantaged.'

"Yes, it doesn't give as many options," He's aware that he's speaking his second language which doesn't happen as much as it used to.

[dwellsinthedetails]

"And yet, without it this wouldn't be possible at all." He does have his sketchbook, and could at least draw enough in quick sketches to make himself understood, but not everyone has that advantage.

"No, not at all. It would be strange to not be able to talk at all here."

[dwellsinthedetails]

"Indeed it would." Still, there's a new experience on offer every time Yusuke comes here, so he finds he can't complain.

"Everyone always seems willing to talk here," And he can ask questions and not work, its nice.
