Translation Fail Plot

It's an odd thing, a Dunmer learning Dunmeris. Most people never have to learn their own native tongue. But Garyn never had cause to use it back in Cyrodiil, and what he had learned from his adoptive father has atrophied considerably. On the bright side, he still remembers the basics, and how to read Daedric, so brushing up is at least within the realm of possibility.

"Ku'ay havakam ohn? Where are you going? Os omlakhag ohn hava de Tedril'am julrehn. I suggest that you go to Tedril's shop."

Garyn hasn't noticed nothing amiss yet, but unless you hail from Nirn you won't understand a word he's saying. Quite botherable.


[OOC: Garyn's native language is Cyrodiilic/Tamrielic. He speaks Ta'agra like a native and Jel as well as any non-lizard person can, which is to say not very well. More importantly, Ibani has taught him how to speak Galactic Basic, so conversing with Star Wars pups is possible.]

Ibani has noticed the linguistic chaos downstairs, the babble of words that usually sound to her like Galactic Basic.

She sees and hears Garyn from across the room, and she can't understand a word of what he's saying. "Garyn?" she asks, worry creeping into her voice. "Can you understand me?" Her words sound different, her true Imperial accent coming through as she speaks her native tongue of Galactic Basic.

Garyn looks up from his translation guide. His brow furrows. He can sense that she sounds different. She speaks her own language now, like she did when he came to her universe. His brow furrows.

"Nei. Er, ite. I mean, yes. I do."

Now he frowns. He continues in Ibani's language.

"Did those three words sound different to you?"

"They did," Ibani replies, relieved that they can communicate. "Something very strange is going on with the communication magic here, it seems to be breaking down in places."

"That's...troubling," Garyn says. "Milliways can hardly function without that magic."

He exhales deeply.

"I'm more glad than ever you gave me your language. If I couldn't even talk to you..."

Ibani slides into a seat next to Garyn and wraps her arms around him. "It is troubling. Hopefully it's a minor bobble that will fix itself soon."

"I'm very glad I gave it to you too. Not being able to talk to you would be hellish, even if I could work around it with the Force."

"I'm sure someone is working on it already," Garyn says. "At least I hope so."

He leans his head on her shoulder for a moment and looks back down at his phrase book.

"Might have taken me some time to notice. I'm working on another language myself."

Ibani keeps her arms around Garyn, holding him close. "Which language are you working on?" she asks, curious. The contents of the phrase book are meaningless lines to her, of course.

"[Ah, the translation failure got to you, too, Garyn?]" Baze asks in Jedhan as he approaches, his staff slung over one shoulder. He's sweaty and tired, but clearly content--well, at least as content as he can be with the chaos that's hitting the bar at the moment.

Garyn looks up to see the source of the question. That's...odd. He can't understand him.

"...I'm sorry, Baze, I didn't catch that."

Cyrodiilic, so at least the confusion is mutual.

Baze shakes his head, grounding his staff.

"[Someone broke the fish. They're congregating by the door, so if we go over there, we can understand each other,]" Baze says, crooking the index finger of his free hand in a "c'mere" gesture. He points to the door, and then starts walking towards it, pausing to see if Garyn follows.

Garyn tilts his head. He doesn't quite follow. Maybe he could try something else. Ibani's language? It's worth a shot.

"What do you want me to go there for?"

"Oh, you speak Basic?" Baze says, turning back to face him. The Guardian shifts his staff to his other shoulder, beaming.

"Did Ibani teach you? I wanted you to go to the door because the translation magic works there."

[moonandstar]

"Yes, she did," Garyn says. "Before I went with her to the temple. I didn't expect I'd ever have to use it here."

He shakes his head.

"As if this place wasn't confusing enough already."

The elf does get a strange look from a creature nearby. The language problems that are plaguing the bar aren't super apparent to him because his translator nanites are working and he can understand many of the languages around him. At least these and the portals were two things the Alterans made well.

"Are you learning a new language?" he asks in Wraith, of course. Searching to see if the mind was able to communicate telepathically.

Garyn looks up from his study and raises an eyebrow.

"I'm sorry, could you repeat that? I wasn't listening."

Yes, this must be the reason he didn't understand him.

Guide sighs a bit impatiently, he's not used to repeating himself.

"Are you learning a new language?" he asks again in Wraith. He must admit that telepathic communication has a lot of advantages, he doesn't see how other creatures get along without it. He's always having to deal with misunderstandings and mistranslations verbally.

Garyn frowns. "Hmm, no. No, I heard you perfectly."

His brow furrows.

"I thought this place translated everything."

[shakemyhand]

Guide furrows his eyes, "You do not understand me?"

"I'm sorry, I can't understand you," Garyn says.

"This shouldn't be happening. Something's wrong."

Cassian's finding Milliways intriguing this way and is listening in a different way and pauses when he hears Garyn possibly repeat a phrase. He nods and says in Festian, "[Was that two languages?]"

He has his datapad in hand as before the language problems, he was doing work.

Garyn looks up from his study.

"Pardon?"

Then, a moment later.

"Oh, right. The translation problem. I'm afraid I don't understand you."

He tries to think of how to ask and with one hand gestures like talking and then with his other hand holds up two fingers, "[Were you speaking two languages?]"

Garyn shakes his head and points toward the door.

"The door. I heard the translation field works over there."

He stands up and begins to walk over there, glancing back over his shoulder to signal Cassian to follow.

That's unexpected but Cassian follows to see what's of interest at the door.

Garyn sits down at a stool very close to the door.

"Right. Can you understand me now?"

He's hoping he's not coming across in Cyrodiilic anymore.
