Guppy is looking tired today, though he did get more sleep last night than he was expecting. He's spent the day restocking the infirmary and is now sitting quietly by the fire doing a Su Doku.

Except he would be, but for some reason, the alarm on his phone keeps going off. Which makes no sense, because the phone normally stops its clock when he's in here. Stupid thing must be broken. Hundreds of trips through space and time probably taking its toll.

One of the waitrats comes to tempt him with a sandwich, which he picks at.

Teja approaches, Count riding on his shoulder, but the cat jumps into the rafters when Guppy's phone goes off the next time.

"Is your phone supposed to be doing that?"

[guppy_sandhu]

"No, it isn't." Guppy says. "Normally it doesn't go off in here at all."

[ostro_goth]

"You might wish to turn it off,and on again?" Teja suggests.

This is Milliways, where even long-dead Ostrogth kings (with second homes in current-day Italy) give you unasked-for advice about phones.

"Tried that." Guppy says, but he does look amused.

"Maybe I should just turn it off." he adds, doing so. "You and yours all okay after the incident earlier in the week?"

"You mean the balrog?" Teja says. "We missed that, as we were in Italy. I hear Yrael did valiantly, and so did many others."

[guppy_sandhu]

"Couple of casualties, and word on the street is Wilford died again, though that doesn't seem to stick." Guppy says.

[ostro_goth]

"How many corpses of his are we now keeping in the cells?" Teja asks.

[guppy_sandhu]

"No idea. Maybe you best ask him what he wants to do with them." Guppy says.

His phone alarm goes off again.

"Okay, that's just creepy."

[ostro_goth]

"But you turned it off!" Teja says.

[guppy_sandhu]

"Some phones do go off with an alarm clock when they're off." Guppy says. "But the clock shouldn't be ticking."

[ostro_goth]

"It should never be ticking," Teja says. "It must be some evil magic."

[guppy_sandhu]

"But it's made by Google, their philosophy is not to be evil." Guppy says.

He shakes his head. "More likely just a design fault. I'll take it to the shop and get it looked at on Monday."

"Have you tried taking out the battery?" Teja asks. "That is sometimes the last recourse with Android phones."

If Guppy wants to laugh at a dead Ostrogoth knowing this (after ten years in Milliways), he now can.

"When did you get so technosavvy?" Guppy asks, trying to work out how to get the battery out of his phone.

[ostro_goth]

"Not when," Teja says. "Where. In the house in Italy Demeter has given me the key to. There, I have one of those."

[guppy_sandhu]

"Really? Who do you call?" Guppy asks, amused.

[ostro_goth]

"People I know in town, other people who fix stuff around the house?" Teja says. "Also, I use the internet and send pictures to Pyrrha."

[guppy_sandhu]

"Do you tweet?" Guppy asks.

[ostro_goth]

"No," Teja says. "I think Pyrrha does something similar, sharing pictures with her friends."

[guppy_sandhu]

"Does Egil go to nursery there?"

[ostro_goth]

"He is to old for nursery; almost school age, as the moderns would see it," Teja says.

[guppy_sandhu]

"Oh gosh, yes, he's about Brooke's age isn't he?"

[ostro_goth]

"He is," Teja says. "It seems so shortly ago that he was a mere babe in arms..."

[guppy_sandhu]

"Brooke has her own door now, it worries me."

[ostro_goth]

"What do you think she might do?" Teja asks.

[guppy_sandhu]

"Stick around to watch danger rather than taking cover?"

[ostro_goth]

"Like the Balrog the other day?"

[guppy_sandhu]

Guppy nods.

"Brooke would think that was exciting."

[ostro_goth]

"I can promise to keep an eye out for her, in clear and present danger," Teja says.

"I cannot, of course, promise that I will be here for all of them."

[guppy_sandhu]

"Thank you. I do feel that it's irresponsible to let a child like Brooke run around this place, but at the same time, if she has her own door, I can't actually stop her." Guppy says. "She might turn out to be worse than Buster, and then I'll never hear the end of it."

"She is much more sensible than Buster," Teja says.

[guppy_sandhu]

"Yeah, just about." Guppy laughs.
