Happy Hour

Cassian grew up on an ice planet, he's used to cold, but he doesn't like it. He never seems able to get warm enough. When he comes in, its from meeting an informant on a mining planet where ash mixes with the snow, the collar of his parka is grey with it. At the counter, he gets a napkin, nods and goes behind to set up Happy Hour and set his bag down. First he pours himself a hot caf and then adds a generous dollop of whiskey to it. He decides to keep things simple as he warms up.

Once the specials are up, he takes off his jacket and cradles his warm drink while he watches to see who's around in Milliways.

Kylo sips his drink before answering.

"Very structured. Ordered. Something the galaxy is sorely missing."

"There was structure and order in the galaxy before the Empire,"

It wasn't perfect but there were ways for change to happen. His father had believed that the Republic could with the help of its citizens better itself. That wasn't possible but Cassian had seen how the Empire didn't listen. Their structure was built on silencing instead of listening.

"Were there, the Empire wouldn't be winning so easily." Sure they'd had setbacks, but the Rebellion falls and Kylo knows it.

"That will change,"

At the moment, the Rebellion isn't as strong as it could be, but it will be.

[firstorderknight]

"Has anything changed? Since you've been around?" It's an honest question. Kylo's up on his history, but he can't exactly place when Cassian's from.

[childofrebellion]

"Yes, more are joining the fight including some who will shift the balance,"

He still doesn't know what to expect from that possible Jedi but they create new opportunities. This man doesn't need to know his doubts.

Kylo looks up at him.

"That's it?"

[childofrebellion]

That's an interesting reaction and Cassian considers him over his caf,

"Were you expecting something else?"

[firstorderknight]

He had, in fact.

"What, no grad battles? No small victories to urge the Rebellion on?"

There are some of those, he knows.

"There are victories,"

Nothing great or grand, but they're making themselves known. That question seems to confirm that this man doesn't know exactly when he's from either.

Cassian is clearly from the past, that much Kylo knows, but he hasn't yet been so rude as to invade the man's mind.

It hasn't seemed necessary, but now the knight finds himself mulling it over.

"There were revels and celebrations, no doubt."

Cassian shrugs, he's known small celebrations but there's always another battle. By choice and by the nature of his work, he doesn't spend a lot of time on base,

"There usually are, a bottle of jetfuel gets passed around."

It's about what he imagined.

"But never too much, right? Low key. You never let yourselves go, lest you be obliterated the next day."

[childofrebellion]

"Some do,"

That's his way, but he's known others who'll drink deep into the night and love fiercely.

[firstorderknight]

"You?"

Kylo already knows the answer to this question. He can't imagine Cassian letting loose for a celebration over a small, single victory.

[childofrebellion]

"No, I don't,"

There have been too many losses alongside any gain.

[firstorderknight]

"Not surprising."

He finishes his drink and stands.

"You're better at this. Maybe you should stick to it."

[childofrebellion]

Cassian raises his eyebrows, he's not that good a bartender or that bad a rebel,

"No, I think I'll remain as I am."

[firstorderknight]

Kylo just shakes his head and walks away.

As he goes, Cassian takes a longer drink of his spiked caf.

That went better than he hoped for, its good to know that at least they're on level ground with not knowing the others' dates.
