While the first touch of morning had dawned grey and heavy, promising rain sometime later in the day, Sunshine had had a long day (and longer night) the day before, and wasn't about to stand for that.
So despite the lackluster dawn, a few hours later the sun is shining and the skies are mostly clear.
And there is a figure stretched out on a bright orange towel down on the beach at the Caribbean inlet, not quite dozing, focused on the all-important task of soaking in as much sunlight as possible.

Still, idle hands are the devil's tools and Zenigata is righteous in his pursuit of justice! So he can't just sit on his thumbs forever. He just... doesn't know what to do with himself, sometimes, especially with the ringing in his ears still going.
So he walks. Maybe it's not the best idea to walk around the grounds when you can't hear shit, but he still has perfectly good eyes, right? It'll be fine.
He's carrying his shoes on the sand of the warmer part of the grounds, dressed in jorts and a t-shirt with no shame, still radiating Big Dad Energy. So, when he spies Sunshine soaking up the rays, he waves and calls her name.
It's louder than necessary, but she already knows he can't hear well, so who'll mind?

"Hey you!" she calls back. "How are you feeling?"
Why yes, that's a minor hearing test.
no subject
"Good day!" he says instead, because you always give a friendly greeting to the lady that made your raw meat ankle into something like new again. "Sorry, but I'm still mostly hearing ringing. Sorry! Should have brought my notepad."

"If you're asking for what i think you are, yes, you can try! I suppose it can't hurt..." But then he turns a critical eye to her, looking for lasting injury or a sign of pain or weariness. "Are you feeling alright, thought?"

She pulls her feet up to move to her knees, scooting over so she might get close enough to see to his ears.

Her scarred hands touch his ears - trying not to be gentle but not tickle - and she closes her eyes.
The effect is less spectacular in full daylight than it is by night. The sun is there, immediate, providing the blazing, bone-melting heat of summer upon her skin as Rae's power extends from her hands into the damaged cochlea of his inner ears. Nerve-damage, hair-cell damage, inflammation surrounding the eardrum itself, are each soothed and eased away by the warmth extending from her hands.

"It's like being back on the beaches of Zanizibar," he says out of nowhere. "The heat of it, relaxing on a beach surrounded by foreign seas when I was a young man. I didn't expect it to feel like that."
The waves becoming clearer, over the ring that's fading away, like he just realized he'd pressed a conch to his ear. But no, it's just the lap of the water against the Caribbean inlet.

"Can you believe I ran away and joined the coast guard?" he asks in a small voice. Nobody ever asks about the Zenigata before Lupin, like the person who Zenigata is now sprang fully formed out of one of Lupin's early thefts. But he has history of his own.
no subject
"Any reason why you chose the Coast Guard?"
no subject
"Coast would take me to some place where there was water, and that wasn't home, I hoped," Zenigata said, before he added, "I wanted to see outside Chiyoda, not just-- slide into the beat cop job I knew I could get without effort. Kanda-Myojin's a great place, but... I didn't want to be the next Zenigata on our old turf."
Then he smiles and adds, "I can hear you clearly now, Sunshine-chan. What you've done is amazing."

So he's out for a stroll, in armor at first, but as he sees and approaches Rae he enters the Caribbean inlet and immediately regrets that decision.
"Hey," he says as he approaches, "you enjoying it out here?"
no subject
"Absolutely," she replies. However comfortable she is in the kitchens or in the bar, there is a measure of relaxation to her posture and manner that is only really there when she is out in the strong sunlight. "Hey there, Fives. How are you?"
A bit warm, she imagines.
no subject
"Not bad," he says. "It's hot out here, though."
He's not sure he sees the appeal, and even has to squint at her in the light.
no subject
"Is is," her approval of the bright heat isn't a secret. "I kind of wiped myself out the other night, and days like this are good for recovery."
Not to come right out and say 'recharging,' as solar-powered as she is.
no subject
"Yeah? The kind of thing I don't want to ask about?" Cheerfully. If she wants to talk about it, he'll listen. If she doesn't he'll talk about something else.

If it's any consolation, she has no bruises showing today. Her bathing suit doesn't exactly hide her scars, but at least all of them are well-healed and none look new.
"Sunshine for Sunshine, so to speak."
no subject
"Sunshine?"
Is that her name? He thought it was Rae.

Nodding up at the heat, he guesses: "more than just a pun, then?"
no subject
"My, um, source of power," Sunshine adds, "for when I'm not being a baker."
He has seen her scars, the un-bakerly bruises she sometimes wears.
no subject
"Like a Jedi," he hazards. "But with solar power instead of the Force?"
no subject
She's heard the word, certainly, and in relation to the Force, but she doesn't know that she has ever met one.
"You're armor has a new look, since last I saw you," Rae remarks, nodding at the painted pieces.
