It's been a very weird day. A very long day. Don't ask her how long it's been. Time is... strange. And possibly doesn't matter much.
At this moment, however, a small teen photographer-in-training is doing some research (i.e. taking a break) on the couch with the Spring 2013 issue of Aperture magazine. Even a vintage camera enthusiasts should stay up to date on the latest news and discussions in their industry. She could claim that it's practically homework.

There's a Zenigata, smiling and bright, with a couple of books tucked under his arm, none of which relate to Lupin III or criminology, for a change, being fare too thin and softbacked.
He takes a seat near by, putting his books on the table; they all have titles that relate to raising a teenager in three ways: a traumatized child, an autistic child, and a queer child. Ami, after all, is all three.
"How have you been?" he asks, as he flags a waitrat down for some simple coffee. (Two cream, two sugar -- you only drink the black tar coffee on stakeout.)

Life is weird, right now, weirder than the usual teen experience, but even at the end of the universe she doesn't know if anyone would believe her. "What about you? Light reading?"
Though, now that she looks, those don't look like light topics.
no subject
"Ah, did I tell you about Ami?" I've got guardianship of a young lady, and... well, we our first holiday together. I just noticed a few places I could learn more, that's all!"
Zenigata, ever training, knows he needs remedial fatherhood lessons. Sure, he Dads anyone he can, but.... that's because of years of previous failure. He just doesn't want to make all new mistakes.
"How's school been?"
no subject
She knows teens can be difficult! Max happens to occasionally be a difficult teen, herself. It comes with the territory.
"School has been a bit of a lot, lately." She may have only been there a month, and it's a highly-strung school to begin with, but today in particular has been a doozy. "But I figure that's kind of to be expected, in an arts and science school. I'm getting along okay."

"You know Japan does a very different schooling system than you do - competitive high schools are like competitive colleges. They take only the best," he says, thinking on it as he looks into his coffee cups. "America only does that for exceptional students in specialized schools."
Or rich ones, like everybody in the world does.
no subject
She hopes it would. The titles of the books Zenigata has gathered paint a complicated picture.
"Yeah, for the most part in the U.S., which school you go to from primary through high school is determined by where you live. The only competitive schools are ones that specialize, like Blackwell, or higher-ed."
no subject
"Exactly. We have plenty of general track high schools, but they still provide education above and beyond what one might consider 'normal' learning," Zenigata says, between sips of his coffee. "My sisters went to one high school, I went to a different one."
no subject
It's still surprising, and amazing, and overwhelming sometimes.
"Does your..." daughter is probably the wrong word? "Does Ami go to a high school in Japan?"
no subject
The question doesn't dim the smile, though. He's still bright and happy as he says, "No. Ami's uncle pays for her private schooling in France. Personally I'd rather her be in a public school for more real-life experience, but her uncle insisted on specialized education."
That's a really simple way of going 'Lupin wanted to be involved, the therapists in the area were good, and it was safe...' but also leave out 'until the CIA and Lupin fucked it up real good.'

He does cock his head as he passes Max and the magazine, though, tilting his perspective to read the title.
"Appar ... Ap-ar-toor-ay," he murmurs. "... I really need to work on my English."

Beat.
"Or both."

She is taking classes to hopefully evolve her hobby into a career, after all.
"How've you been, Yamato?"
no subject
The kind of stuff that would go straight over Yamato's head. He doesn't know a whole lot about photography, after all.
"I've been okay. I got accepted to the program I was applying for, and we figured out why, er, our old mentor who now wants to end the world decided to post monsters under a bunch of interdimensional Gates."
Beat.
"Which is a start."
no subject
Though forgive her if she sounds a bit distracted...
"That's great you got accepted to the program you wanted to get into! Though... why does your old mentor wants to end the world?"
This kind of stuff goes straight over her head, Yamato. Max doesn't know a whole lot about trying to save the world. She is leaving aside the fact that Yamato's mentor wants to end the world at all, and not about to question the existence of interdimensional gates.

Simple. Or something.
His expression turns a little awkward at that question about Gennai's motivation, and he shuffles his feet a little before responding.
"Oh, er. I guess because he's fulfilling his programming? Or reinterpreting it," Yamato says. "The eight of us are hosts for beings that are his world's gods, and he was one of their first creations, that they programmed to preserve the peace. And he's -- bitter, I guess, because he waited for thousands of years for us to turn up, thinking that when we arrived we'd put an end to war and conflict. So now he's still following his programming, he's just concluded that the only scenario where peace actually exists is one where everybody's dead."
He pauses for a second, turning a little more awkward, then adds: "And he's angry at me specifically, because the, er, death god inside me promised to let him die when his work was done. I only found out about that pretty recently."
no subject
Okay, more than a little. Then she shakes her head.
"Yamato, that's a lot to take in, and I'm just hearing about it," she says, voice shaking a bit with the idea of something so enormous. But this is Milliways; she doesn't question the validity of what he says in the slightest. "But what about you - are you doing okay? How're you holding up?"
How does one start trying to reconcile all that?

She now has a lion cub sharing her coach, spine aligned with her thigh, head lolling backwards into the crease of her hips.
She can read and scritch, right?

She can read and scritch, as it turns out. Hands are handy.

"The buffalos have a beef about this season's grass. The antelope say they don't have enough time at the watering hole. And the chimps are exciting about this new invention called 'sticks.'"

"In the chimps' defense, sticks are pretty great," she remarks, thinking of the childhood days spent playing pirates. The woods by Arcadia Bay provided all the best cutlasses.
