Peter is sitting on one of the tables along the wall, legs folded in front of him, a number of books and pages around him. It looks either incredibly intense or very disorganized. Truth is, it's probably a little bit of both.

All of the pages are full of chemical formulae and math and math and more math and scribble notes about equations and formulations and any number of other things. It could be web fluid updates, it could be fifteen different cookie recipe calculations, or maybe it's something related to the whole potato comparison situation from the other day. Ask him and find out.

Elves are by nature curious creatures, and a stack of papers and books hardly ever fails to attract the attention of the loremasters.
At least this particular loremaster.

Elrond is dressed for a day in the study. Everything is soft and flowy and in the colours of dark wood and aged paper. His hair is unadorned and in one hand he is carrying a small, leatherbound volume.

He smiles as he sees Peter's choice of seating arrangement.

"Immersing yourself in knowledge?" he asks with a small smile as he puts his own book down on the neighboring table.

Blinking a bit, he looks up from the notebook in his lap. "Oh hi!" He glances at the mess on the table. "Um - sort of? Doing some calculations for a project."

"Ah, he says, lighting up.
"I thought I recognized the look of a craftsman deep in thought."

He wouldn't presume to guess at the young Man's skill level based on his age.

"I - huh, I guess I was, maybe." It happens more often than he thinks, really.

He holds up a sheet with a design that could be constructed from Lego. "It could end up as a homework assignment if I can find somewhere for it to fit."

"Does it have a purpose to it?" Elrond asks, curiously.

It seems that a no would be a perfectly acceptable answer.

All things need not have a purpose as such to be valid.

"Uh, if I use it for homework, hopefully to get a good grade." Which is highly likely. He's never gotten a bad grade on anything.

"You are in - high school?"

It's a guess, and he isn't quite sure it's a good one. But it's a term he's come across more than once here, so it seems like a decent guess.

"I am, yeah." And for one of the first times ever, the question didn't seem to come with a negative inflection. "Sophomore. I graduate in a couple years."

"I often wonder," Elrond says,smiling, "what it would have been like? To live in a place where learning was ordered so meticulously, like a clear path from childhood into youth."

He would have liked it. You can tell.

Sameth's on his way to the counter and pauses to look at the stack of books and pages, some of the math is vaguely familiar but not all of it, "What are you working on?"

Whenever he's talked to other people making things here, he always gets ideas. He's in a linen shirt with the grime of his workshop on it, his Charter Mark is just visible where he's pushed his sweaty hair.

"A couple things," he says. He points to one stack of pages - "Working out a new hot cocoa concoction." Another stack - "That's my research on loaded fries." Totally a goofy and wholly unnecessary exercise, but it's fun. "And a couple other projects that aren't quite far enough for details yet."

"You're a cook?" That's the only person he can think of who would think of food that way, someone like Sunshine but the rest doesn't look like food work.

He shakes his head. "Not in any official sense of the word. But I really like hot cocoa and I'm working on developing a really amazing version. And for the fries - I was doing a taste test the other day for fun and science." Science is fun for him.

"Those sound like delicious projects. What's going to make the hot chocolate so good?" Sameth didn't think it was that complex to make.

He shrugs. "I dunno yet." He nudges a notebook. "That's what the research is for," he says with a grin.

"Research is good if you can find anything helpful. I'm Sameth,"

He's had a lot of trouble finding information to help him with his work in the Old Kingdom.

"Peter," he says. "I'm mostly making calculations based on things I already know. Extrapolating, you know?" He's being a big nerd.

Yamato cocks his head as he passes, peering at the notes.

"Research for fun or homework?" He asks eventually.

He waves, though there's a piece of paper in his hand. "Hi. Um - a little bit of both, really."

"... Research for fun homework?" Yamato ventures, taking a seat. "It's been known to happen."

Maybe not often, but fun homework isn't entirely impossible.

"More, fun research that could relate to homework in some way." He sometimes works way ahead of the current lesson in class, partly because he just gets interested in stuff and partly because school moves too slowly for him.

Yamato gives the research a slightly dubious look, before dropping into the seat opposite Peter, resting his hand on his chin.

"What's the research about?"

"This is about which type of potatoes make the best loaded fries. I did taste tests earlier and now I'm writing down and calculating all of the variables."

"Pretty sure the formula for which potatoes make the best fries just comes down to starch content. High starch good, low starch waxy potatoes bad, since you want a minimum of moisture when they're fried," Yamato says thoughtfully.

"Okay - I should clarify, it's more which potato preparation. Crinkle cut fries are the worst - I don't know why, but they aren't good covered in stuff. The shoestring style are amazing, but you can't discount the tater tots, because they are super good with all the loaded fry options." He's studied this quite a bit.
