Joe is sitting in the bar, sipping whiskey and looking thoughtful. He doesn't look averse to company, though; hell, maybe he wants his mind taken off things.

For a moment it looks like Roland is going to say fuck yeah, but then he shakes his head. "If it's here, there's a reason. It'll open eventually."

Too bad, that would've been awesome.

"That's what worries me."

"And me." Whiskey. "It's got something to do with me."

Joe nods. "S'pose it's waitin' for you to guess the password?"

"Eddie suggested I try chassit."

Chassit makes him think of the book and Anthy with a noose around her neck.

"Mm."

"Haven't tried it yet. Didn't want to risk anything, while Jake was...out."

Joe nods. "Might be worth a shot. It don't feel... still, might be worth a shot."

Roland studies him. "Why do you say 'might'?"

Joe shrugs.

Idly: "You know something you're not telling?"

Joe shakes his head. Well, there's the book. "Might work, might not. I still don't know where I picked up the word. Where ever it was, don't seem like it goes with that door, that's all."

Roland considers the night when Joe kept him from flying off the deep end.

He considers the fact that Walter left the door there.

He nods. "You say true."

Joe smokes a little bit. "You tried the front door lately?"

Roland shakes his head. "Not with Jake how he was." Simply, with no embarrassment.

Joe nods. "It can be easy to get into the habit of not."

He's deliberately not, these days. But back in the day, he checked once of a week.

Roland's quiet for a moment.

"I'll start checking again soon."

Joe nods. "Take some time to appreciate this. Things are lookin' good for once. Fuckin' door to the side, o'course."

"Door to the side," Roland agrees.

And Susan, but Joe doesn't need to know that.

Joe twists his head and pops his neck. "Reckon I'll be 'long to bed. Go see Ma Giry when you get the chance, but there ain't no hurry, s'long as we finish b'fore the wedding. I reckon we'll be leavin' for good after."

Roland nods. "I'll find Meg." Pause. "Long days and pleasant nights."

And no dreams of the Tower.

"And may you have twice the number, Roland. My regards to Jake."
