David is, inexplicably, sitting at the bar, playing with a cocktail umbrella.

He looks quite a bit better than he has these past few days.

"I didn't make a choice," Charlie whispers. "I didn't think . . . I didn't think. It was instinct, David. It was gut reaction."

"Self-defense?"

"I suppose so. Even if I had a gun and he didn't."

"He tried to kill you once. Succeeded. I'd say it was self-defense, no matter what terms you were on, love," he whispers, kissing Charlie's neck softly. "I'm sorry I yelled."

Charlie closes his eyes at the kiss. "Forgiven, David."

He strokes Charlie's back softly. "Thank you, though I don't deserve it."

"Don't be silly. I'm not heartless. I love you too much not to forgive you for something like this."

Another soft kiss to his neck. "Love you too, Charlie. And I'm still sorry."

"David," he whispers, "why did you never establish a blood link with me?"

He's silent, just for a few moments.

"I didn't think you'd want it..."

He plays with David's hair. "Nick was so ecstatic when he told me about linking with Alex. And Richard and Armand, it's such a big part of their relationship.

"I just wonder . . . well, never mind. It's the past."

Charlie...

He pulls back, just a little, and kisses Charlie.

When he pulls back, he nuzzles his nose against his.

"I... we had troubles with the feeding from the start."

"I like it. It scared me how much I liked it. I loved to feed from you, I loved knowing I was nourishing you. But it scared me, too. What it could do to me. It scared me."

He nods against Charlie's shoulder.

"If you..."

He draws away.

"No, I couldn't. For fear of what it would do to you, for fear of what it would do to me."

"Well, it's a lovers' thing anyway, isn't it? And you've got your god and I've got . . . hope."

"It's a relationship thing, not just for lovers. I have one with... I have one with Richard."

He sighs.

"Oh."

He touches Charlie's cheek.

"Would you...?"

"I don't know," he whispers. "It would mean you'd have to feed from me , wouldn't it? Like, frequently?"

A nod.

"At least once every few days."

He runs his fingertips lightly down David's neck. "And it won't make me a vampire, yeah?"

He closes his eyes, biting back the soft whimper and gasp in his throat.

"No..."

"And it'll mean what, exactly? We'll be able to communicate better through our thoughts . . ?"

He looks at David's face, his closed eyes and tensed face, and softly kisses the end of his nose.

His eyes open, slowly.

"And through our feelings," he says, somewhat shakily. "I'll be able to feel when you're happy, sad, upset, when you need me you can call on me."

His fingers stroke Charlie's hip gently.

Charlie looks at him thorugh his lashes. "Let's do it." His fingers tighten in David's hair.
