The door opens, and River wanders in.

She looks to be in a reasonably good mood; at least, she's looking around the room, rather than staring at the floor or the air, even if her gaze doesn't quite settle quite normally. It's the tall boots today, rather than bare feet, under a loose floral skirt, and a couple of shirts in layers.

"Baōzi," she repeats slowly and helpfully.

Pause. Silly monolingual people. "Dumplings."

Roland nods. "The bar can get them. You want them?"

Cue the hopeful look again.

Roland crosses to the bar, tries to say what she said. Can't do it. Nothing appears.

He looks to River. "You'll have to say it. I can't."

River likes Roland quite a lot. So she's really trying not to giggle at his pronunciation.

She doesn't quite succeed.

"Baōzi," she tells the bar, enunciating carefully for Roland's sake. River hasn't fully learned yet that, no, speaking more clearly does not make English speakers able to pronounce Mandarin correctly.

A plate of plump steamed dumplings appears on the bar. River strokes a spread hand along the top of it. "Xièxie," she says, in a rare display of remembering to use manners aloud.

Roland looks at them, and with a raised eyebrow, says, "A bowl of beef stew, and bread."

The bar provides him with a bowl of stew -- and a long baguette.

Roland stares at it.

"Bread," River says helpfully.

She perches on a stool, and bites into a dumpling. It is very tasty, says her face.

After reflection, and swallowing, she adds, "Can hit people with it. Brothers. It wouldn't hurt."

...Yeah, she's a little sister, all right.

Roland breaks off the end, dunks it in the stew, chews thoughtfully. Swallows.

"It would if you swung hard enough."

A gunslinger is never off-duty.

River shrugs. Playing is more fun.

More dumpling.

And Roland eats as well.

Eventually: "What language is that, that you were speaking?"

"Mandarin."

She even remembers to use the English term. It's about even odds, generally.

"Everyone speaks it. They speak both. Not here."

She blows out a breath.

"Silly. It's not hard."

"Hard if you've never heard it. Or if you're from another world.

Roland says something. It sounds like he's gargling grease.

She gives him a strange look.

"See?"

No, she doesn't.

The strange look continues apace.

"You know Sellian?"

It's admittedly an obscure piece of profanity.

A bit more peering.

Eventually, "Cerulean?"

"Means blue," she explains helpfully.

Roland shakes his head. "A language of my world. Sellia. A Barony of the Outer Rim."

River thinks about this.

Then she decides that her dinner is more interesting.

Roland might agree.

So he, too, eats.
