(no subject)

Even though it isn't the warmest day, Valentine is out back, by the lake. She has spent most of the day lying on her back on the raft in the middle of the lake staring up at the clouds, thinking through things that she probably should have thought through a while ago. However, now, as night falls, she swims back to shore, curling up in a towel and her swimsuit staring at the lake. As the moon rose, she just stared at the stars, her heart longing for a different time, a time that she was perhaps not as safe as she is now, but a time that somehow seemed simpler, more peaceful.

*Meg plays with Millitime sees Val on her way in from the forest, where she's been practicing, and squints at her.*

Val?

You okay?

*Meg comes straight to the point, sitting down next to her.*

*Meg winces.* Yeah. Dreams can do that to you - I'm kind of glad I haven't remembered most of mine lately. Hope you didn't sleepwalk too far?

*Meg says: stare.*

. . . so in other words, through an obstacle course with a possibility of drowning, getting eaten by a bear, or getting a lot of really bad splinters?

*Meg makes a face.* Those woods, *she proclaims, with the air of one about to make a great revelation,* are weird.

I swear the trees are sort of malicious - one of them broke my dreamcatcher once. *She puts a hand to it, for safekeeping.*

'course it was, *Meg says, quietly.* If you were dreaming it, it got pulled out of your subconscious from before. And all.

Well, you didn't see it in the bar, *Meg says, reasonably.* You saw it in your head.

*Meg sighs.*

Because la vie works like that.

Nothing's ever easy.

But you can't, *Meg says, shaking her head.* You have to cling to what you know, and when all you've got is what your own self knows, you have to cling to that most of all.

*Meg considers.*

Then you choose one, *she says, eventually,* and cling with all your might, and pray to Dieu that you made the right choice.

You're married, *Meg points out, gently, for Meg.*

Haven't you already chosen?

What's the point? *Meg says, reasonably.* You made it. It's done. It's the past.

You can't change it, so fretting over it won't do any good.

It doesn't matter, *Meg says, patiently.*

You made a choice.

Therefore, for you, it is the right choice. 'cause it has been the right choice. Do you see what I mean?
