Ray would creep up behind Romana if he were any good at creeping, but he's not. So she probably has plenty of warning before he brings his hands down over her eyes. "Guess who?"

Oh, she had plenty of warning but she'll play along. She smiles warmly. "Joshua Norton?"

"Much as I'd love to be Emperor of the United States, I'm afraid not." He grins, though she can't see it, and drops his hands so he can turn it into a hug-from-behind. "Hi, Romana."

"Maybe you will be someday." Romana thinks he'd make a rather kindly Emperor. She sets her knitting down and leans back into the hug. "Hullo, Ray."

"It'd certainly make getting grant money easier." He takes the oportunity to kiss her cheek before letting go and digging in his pockets. "Got something for you here, by the way."

"Are you in need of money?" She has plenty of it and very little use for American currency.

Then Romana turns around a little and gestures to the seat next to her. She'll kiss him back when he's done rummaging. "A present?"

"Nah, not at the moment. The ghostbusting business is paying pretty darned well these days. I'm just talking on general principle."

He smiles and settles into the seat, eventually coming up with a box. "Yup. The one I asked Suti to help me get."

In the box that he hands over lies a pendant- a small golden jaguar, perfectly shaped and crafted. The spots and other little details are tiny polished chips of various gemstones, mostly onyx and garnet; the chain is equally intricate metalwork. "As soon as I saw it, I thought of the time we spent with you showing me the Mayans," Ray says. "I don't think I could've picked out better myself."

Romana blinks and stares at it. She manages to say "It's lovely" before kissing him.

Which is exactly the response Ray was hoping for; he kisses right back.

She feels slightly guilty for not getting him something but she can do that later.

She gives him a hug when they're done kissing. "Thank you."

Ray smiles, one of his big, foolish, enthusiastic smiles. "You're welcome... Want me to, you know-" He reaches for the chain with one hand, indicating her neck with the other.

She grins and nods.

Ray nods, carefully slipping the chain free of its moorings. He has to stand up to do this right, bringing the ends of the chain up and around Romana's neck. The tiny clasp gets fastened only after he's lifted her hair out of the way; with a somewhat unusual bravery for him, Ray takes the opportunity to kiss the back of Romana's neck lightly before dropping her hair back into place and sitting down again. "There you go," he says. "I don't have a mirror or I'd show you, but it looks good on you..."

She blushes but she's obviously pleased. She caresses his cheek when he sits back down. "You're really amazing, Ray."

He doesn't have an answer to that, except to turn an interesting shade of pink and duck his head. "Thank you," he murmurs, and although his voice is quiet, he's obviously pleased. "I'm just glad you approve."

She chuckles then asks teasingly. "Of you or of the necklace?"

"Both," Ray admits. "I mean, the necklace obviously, but if you hadn't liked it I could always have groveled a bit and then found you something else. If you didn't approve of me for some reason, I'd be in a really bad position right about now." He reaches out to touch Romana's cheek lightly with one hand. "I've gotten amazingly fond of you, you know."

"Well, truthfully the necklace is lovely but even if it hadn't been I'd would have liked it because you gave it to me."

She colors slightly. "I'm rather fond of you too, you see."

"Oh good," Ray says, before his brain has the chance to step in and muddle the good simple words up. "That's an important thing too. I'm glad-"

He pauses, a memory coming to mind, and says, "Before we go any further with this, can I ask you a question? I got invited to a wedding in New York at the start of June, and they said I could bring a guest... would you like to come?"

Romana tilts her head and thinks about it. A wedding...hm.

"Sure. I've never really been to one before. It'll be exciting."

Ray smiles. "All right, then. I'll tell Warren and Isabel that we're coming. Thank you." He leans in for another hug- why not, after all? "Now I get to tell Isabel that I'm not chicken after all. She didn't think I'd ever get up the nerve to ask you."

Romana chuckles. "Why didn't she think you would be able to?"

Ray shrugs. "I don't know. I don't know her very well- I really only know her through Warren, and I don't think I even met her before the other night. Maybe Warren said something to her- I don't know. It's not like I've actually dated anybody since coming to Milliways except for you, so she can't be accusing me of being fickle or anything..."

"Too shy maybe?"

Ray opens his mouth, but doesn't quite say anything. Then he closes it, and just nods. "Probably," he admits.

Excuse me, but I couldn't help but notice you from across the room.

What are you working on?

*he smiles and look at her curiously*

No trouble. It's not a very important project.

*smiles* But it is or at least will be a hat someday.

Oh..that's creative.

She just chuckles.

"I'm Romana and I'm from Gallifrey. It's a planet."
