Chris is down in the bar, at the Bar.

She orders a salad and some lemonade. For a moment she's tempted to get something alcoholic but sensibility wins out. Besides, the Bar is moving slow enough with the orders as it is.

Chris grabs a fork and starts poking at her salad. Maybe she'll actually eat some of it. You can come talk to her if you want, she might actually talk back.

[OOC: He's probably heard of him. Ryan seems to know the name of EVERYONE at CTU:LA. Not just the department heads.]

"He's, uh, seeing someone," Chris adds.

[OOC: Could they have met once or twice?]

"Really?" Unexpected, but interesting. "Who?"

[OOC: Sure!]

"Her name's Elaine. She's a British woman. From the 12th century," Chris says dryly.

And she's eighteen. Not that Chris has any room to judge anymore.

[OOC: Yay. That makes things a little easier.]

He pauses a moment. "That kind of thing happens a lot around here, doesn't it?"

"More often than you know." ~~Heh.~~

"Most people don't even bat an eyelash at the unusual couples."

"Well, I'm not saying there's anything wrong with it, but...I mean, how does that work? Dating someone when there's a thousand-year time difference?"

"She's dead and he's dead so it's not like either of them is going anywhere," Chris shrugs.

"She's been here for several months so he already knows quite a bit about what happens after her lifetime."

"Oh." Well, that makes sense, though he remembers what Audrey had told him about dead people not being able to stay here forever.

"Well, wouldn't he know all about what happens after her lifetime anyway? I mean, it's ancient history as far as we're concerned."

"He does but it makes it easier if she does as well, it puts them on the same page."

"Well, yeah, that makes sense." The idea is still a weird one to him, but kind of intriguing. Being dead makes all the strange goings-on of this place a little easier to accept.

"I think a lot of people view this place as a second chance at the things they missed in life."

Subtle? Nah.

If Chris wants to get anything across to him, she's going to have to be less subtle than that. Castle doesn't get subtlety.

"Yeah, but what about the people who aren't dead? What are they here for?"

"A vacation? To meet people they wouldn't see otherwise? The universe is random and unknowable?"

"Yeah, I'll just go with that last one. Saves me the trouble of having to be philosophical."

"And we know what a philosophical guy you are," she says with a slight smile.

He laughs a little, not disputing the sarcasm. "Yeah, well, I have other talents."

"You do," she says with a small smile and takes a drink of her lemonade.

"I'll just leave the philosophy to you, then."

His coffee cup finally refills itself. He doesn't notice.

She shrugs. "There's a very good reason why I majored in Computers and not Philosophy."

"You're still more suited to it than me." He notices the coffee and stirs some cream into it. "There's a very good reason I take down terrorists for a living and don't teach English."

It occurs to him belatedly that he's going to have to stop referring to himself in the present tense. The realization hits him pretty painfully.

Chris notices the use of the present tense and the look that follows.

She gently puts a hand on his arm.

He covers it briefly with his own, a platonic gesture.

"I'm, uh, going to go upstairs for a while," he says, keeping his voice level. "I'll talk to you later, okay?"

"Sure," she answers softly.

"Take care."
