Faith comes in from outdoors, looking quietly pleased, and acquires dinner and coffee, then curls up in front of the fireplace.

Tomorrow, there will be blood and violence and possibly all manner of woe. Tonight...tonight was good.

As Alain would say, it is well.

"A friend's birthday party was tonight," Faith says with a shrug. "Doom, yes, but we're going after Tonks tomorrow, so."

"Oh, good, more parties--wait. What? What about Tonks?"

"You don't know?"

Faith makes an apologetic face. "She...there was an attack, in her world, and she was taken. But she's alive, apparently, and we're going after her."

"Christ," Charlie mutters. "I'm out of whatever loops there are, I think. Haven't heard a thing since she and Bossman got engaged."

"Shit. I'm sorry, Charlie."

It's on the tip of her tongue to tell him about the baby, but there's no point upsetting him further.

"We're gonna get her back, though."

"Good," he murmurs, "good. God. Poor Bernard.

"Were other people attacked? Is everyone else okay?"

"I don't know about anybody else," Faith says, very quietly. "She's the only person I've heard anything of. I know there...there were probably deaths, but...I don't know who."

"Fucking crazy world," Charlie says and rubs his face.

Faith snorts softly.

"They all are."

He laughs dryly. "True that.

"Hey--have you seen Liam lately? I haven't seen him around for a while."

"Uhm."

Faith thinks.

"Not since right after you stopped being the shy, quiet type. Which, by the way, never thought I'd describe you that way."

He chuckles. "Yeah. Some kind of demonic bug thing, as I understand it."

"Yeah, Mel Fray, the other Slayer here, killed it. Spat a pushpin at it."

"Well, I'll have to buy her a drink at some point for that."

"I think a whole lot of people have been." Faith grins. "Thing is? She didn't even know what it was. She just got bored and killed a fly."

"Who cares why she did it, I'm just glad she did. I--I didn't notice the difference but looking at that week, god. Just boring and blank and--and no passion. What's a bloke got if he's got nothing to live for, yeah?"

Faith nods. "Yeah."

She leans into him, embracing him, and kisses his cheek.

"Plus, you're much more fun when you're letting me crawl all over you."

"I will admit to enjoying that as well," Charlie murmurs, making eyes at her.

Faith snorts quietly and pokes his ribs lightly. "Don't start that."

She's only half-joking.

"Flirtation is a natural state of being," Charlie says archly.

"Only 'cause you're so hot."

"And don't you forget it, Faith o' my heart."

"I'm not likely to."

Faith reaches over and plays a few bars of the Springsteen song I'm On Fire. Musical flirtation is love.

"'Tell me now baby is he good to you, can he do to you the things that I do, uh-huh,'" Charlie sings. "'I can take you higher. Oh, I'm on fire.'"

Faith sings along, her voice low and a little rough.

"'Sometimes it's like someone took a knife, baby, edgy and dull, and cut a six-inch valley through the middle of my soul...'"
