Ace in a bar.

Actually, more like Ace in a booth in the far corner of the bar, staring disconsolately at the picked-apart mess that used to be a peanut butter and marmite sandwich. Come ask her what the hell she was thinking. Or why she's still here, when there is clearly a sign on the board that says she isn't.

She shakes her head.
"How long? He... He collapsed... and then Baby wouldn't let me see him, an'..."

"He was gonna get out soon. So Stupid!"

"He made his choice, Ace. And if I can keep him here for you, I will."

A pause.

"Surely, if he was dying, Baby would let you see him?"

He strokes her hair, softly.

"I... I dunno." Seems logical, right? So did her plan of leaving the bar. Nothing seems right anymore.

"Trust me, Ace. If the problem is what it feels like, from here, any distraction, any movement that he notices, would cause him some difficulty. Even regular foot traffic."

He kisses her forehead.

"And I am going questing for part of the cure, so he should be getting better soon."

Mustn't hurt him more. That's one thing she's finally got straight in her head. She nods.

And the second, she looks worried. And perhaps, a bit afraid.
"Be careful?"

Raven hugs her a bit more tightly.

"I will be right as rain. I promise. Sir Alanna will be with me, so I expect to be safe as houses."

Ace just looks at him.

"Please don't ever say that again." Brrr.

"All right. I will be safe as only a practically omnipotent creator of worlds who does not need a body can be, then. And I will be very careful."

"Good." A pause. "'Cause if you come back half-mad and burning again, I'll help Coyote beat you up."

Raven tilts his head.

"If I do something that stupid again, I believe I shall let you."

Operant conditioning, anyone?

Yeah, but for which one?
"Let me, nothing. Coyote'll hold you down." A faint smirk.

Raven shudders dramatically.

"You are being unfair."

He pouts.

"...No...." She replies thoughtfully. "If I threatened to eat cookies in front of you after beating the snot out of you, now that'd be unfair."

Raven shakes his head.

"No, that would be cruel."

He is not giving her puppy eyes.

He's not.

"No, cruel would be if I actually did eat the cookies in front of you after beating the snot out of you." She corrects, trying not to melt under the power of the puppy eyes, which he is so most certainly giving her.

"You wouldn't do that, though, would you?"

He looks very woebegone.

"I dunno. You gonna come back into the bar like before?" She raises an eyebrow at him. It counters the woebegone... just.

He shakes his head.

"No, I will not."

But he doesn't promise.

She understands this. She didn't make Tim promise to come back from the War alive. Some things can't be promised. They just have to be tried.
"Good." She snuggles into his shoulder. "'Cause I'm still no good with that spatula thing."

Raven pulls her closer, and rests his cheek on her hair.

"You will not need to be."

He closes his eyes, and breathes.

She sighs, and relaxes.
"I won't go again. Not for good. Promise." Some things can't be promised.

Some things can.
