"Greetings, Chur. You seem much content tonight..."

Chur sets her paper and pencil aside and purses her lips into a smile. "H'lo, na Mace. Yes, I am in a good mood - working on a gift for someone I met yesterday."

"And you fur is extra shiny too" He smiles. "A gift?"

Chur nods, and shows him the piece of paper with the characters on it.

"A spaceship captain named Mal Reynolds wrote that for me. He says it means 'mapmaker'. So I'm writing him something in chaura, so that should he ever encounter another hani... or learn to read chaura... he has a sign about being a captain."

"I see... a very useful gift." He nods.

Chur smiles. "Would you like me to write one for you?"

"yes, I would like it, very much..." he smiles... wow, he is smiling a lot lately.

Chur gets up and gets another piece of paper, square like the other two, and carefully writes something in a language with very angular, connected letters. When she's done, she reads it aloud, in a language that sounds... well, like a lion might sound if it talked: «This is na "Mace", a "human" "Jedi". He is known to Chur Anify par Chanur.»
Mace's name, and the words for 'human' and 'Jedi' sound much like they would in a human language, except the vowels seem squashed out of them.

"The language sounds very interesting... exquisite..." A smile and nod.

Chur hands the piece of paper to Mace with another smile. "Apparently it's frightening to hear for some people."

"People with no experience with other cultures, perhaps" he chuckles...

Chur sneezes a laugh. "Most people here haven't ever seen someone who wasn't human."

"I am used to humans being about a minority..."

Chur narrows her eyes in curiosity. "Really? I thought all the other universes had majorities of humans."

"In my galaxy, there were humans almost any and everywhere. but the local races were many more. If all the humans gathered, they would be majority, yes... but it was a large galaxy."

Chur nods thoughtfully. "I suppose that makes sense," she agrees. "I don't know how many humans there are in my galaxy... I've only met a few dozen."

He nods "In every planet not colonized by humans, humans were a minority."

Chur ponders this. "That makes sense," she agrees. "Certainly there's only one human in all of Compact Space, now that the humanities have their war to deal with."

Nods too. "And, being a diplomat, I grew used to different cultures and races."

"I imagine so," Chur says. "The races of the Compact get pretty used to the others, if only because you can't really survive just trading with your own species. Well, except the knnn, but... the knnn are what they are."

"Som,e races in my galaxy do not like strangers..." He agrees. "some are prety much self-sufficient, in their own ways."

"We don't know if the knnn don't like strangers," Chur admits. "We can't really talk to them, besides basic navigational stuff."

"how come?" He is curious...

Chur flicks an ear. "They have five brains, and communicate by singing songs in harmony with themselves. They don't... really seem to grasp the idea of having only one brain."

"I can imagine how... different, they must seem."

Chur nods ruefully. "When my captain's aunt was flying, the knnn used to just take whole ships and leave other ships as trade. At least they don't do that anymore."

"They realized people were not happy with that..." A nod. "I have met some very different cultures."

Chur flicks an ear. "I'm sure you would, being a diplomat," she agrees.

"Ah, yes indeed. I was a hard but interesting job, mediate cultural differences..."

Chur sneezes a soft laugh. "Interesting, I'm sure, the same way poison in your tea is interesting."

"About so, yes. But someone had to do it, and I was more skilled than most."

Chur nods. "That's the way of it - if you're skilled, you do it, even if you'd rather not, when it's needed."

A grave nod... no need to comment further on that truth...
