Introductions

Paikea, eyes so firmly fixed on the horizon of the ocean is surprised to see that she is no longer on the boat with her tribe, that she is now presented with a door which she cautiously opens entering into a strange bar setting. A lanky twelve year old Maori girl stands confused at the entrance, at first hesitant to ask where she is, slightly overwhelmed with the transition of her surroundings.

Todd, who's been standing at the bar talking to various folks, turns his head and takes a look at the confused newcomer. He sizes her up for several moments - not doing much else, really, other than looking.

Her attention slowly turns to the shiny blonde boy. She returns the look, if only in a twelve year old's manner of sizing another up. Definately aware that she isn't in Kansas anymore, she's slightly wary but desperate to know what's going on.

Todd senses the desperate part, anyway. He's good at that. He slings his hands in the pockets of his varsity jacket and wanders over, smiling cheerfully.

"Hi there. Did you just get here?"

"y-yes" Her heavy New Zealand accent is obvious immediately, she appears a little shy if only because she's just been taken totally out of her element "where am I? who are you?"

Ooh, New Zealand-y. Todd's eyes glitter with interest, but his voice is soft, compassionate even.

"No need to be alarmed. This is Milliways. It's a gathering place, of sorts. If you ended up here, there's probably a readon." His grin widens. "My name's Todd. Todd Bowden. What's your name?"

"Pai" her posture seems a little less rigid now, feeling reassured by this other human presence. The golden boy's sunny nature gives her something to work with, oddly reminding her of home.

Todd - ignoring James, for the moment - extends his hand...to be shaken, apparently. "Nice to meet you, Pai. That's an interesting sort of name." Maybe he pictures it being spelled 'Pie' - who knows with him.

Her resumed sense of caution causes her to look at the hand momentarily, and slowly extend her thinner younger hand to his. "Thank you," she shows signs of only blushing slightly at the praise. "I was named after our tribe's first chief, he came on the back of a whale."

Todd shakes her hand briskly, though not too hard, as she is quite a bit smaller than him. Then he puts both hands back in his pockets. "Wow, you have a tribe? Are you an Indian or something?"

"Maori" she says both matter-of-factly and with a subtle touch of pride.

"Excuse me," Beth pipes up from her nearby seat. She offers a friendly, if slightly amused, smile. "What exactly did you call this place?"

Todd looks up and over at her, smiling at the pretty, if bescarred, blonde chickie. "A gathering place," he answers cheerfully. "That's what I like to think of it as."

She nods at him, looking much like an audience member at a good magic show - entertained but not entirely sure she believes in what is going on. "You say you think there's probably a reason for people finding themselves here?"

"There might be," Todd grins. "I think people end up here when they need to. Y'know, maybe to meet the right folks. Make the right connections. Guess you're new here, huh?"

"New? Yeah, I guess I am." She hesitates, then extends her hand. "I'm Beth."

*enters just as the girl asks who the blond boy is. He glares at Todd with dislike.*

His name's Todd, and he's a bloody thief. Lies a lot, too. I'm James. What's your name?

Todd glares back at James, folding his arms, but he says nothing. Just goes on looking at Paikea as if nothing has happened.

She seems startled by the intrusion, the boy she was speaking with seemed nice enough, a sense of caution is reassumed simply by the nature of the conflict, "Pai" she says carefully. "Everyone has a purpose, the tribe needs everyone" she says optimistically and tries to smile.

"Do you know how I got here?" still a little shy, but trying to gather information as fast as she could to swifter get her bearings.

Not sure. What were you doing before you got here?

"I was on my father's boat, the whole tribe, rowing in time..." she trails off, slightly saddened, lost in her train of thought "my eyes were on the horizon, calling out to my people, to row.." and suddenly all i could see in front of me was a door and my family was gone."

Sounds like the bar called you, all right. Or something did. People who end up here by accident generally have something they have to do or learn before they leave.

*shrugs*

Not everyone ends up learning, though.

*face darkens and he glances away from Pai*

Sometimes people would rather do anything than change.

the look on Pai's face changes to compassion at the change of her companion's mood, "how did -you get here?"
