This is a place that Katherine DeQuincy hasn't seen in a long time.

Milliways, that is.

She didn't actually expect to see it ever again, but smiles quite broadly once she places it, right away heading over to Bar and ordering an Irish coffee.

It's a good deal safer than where she came from.

Michael is at the Bar, also ordering coffee. He nods a greeting, since she's right next to him.

Katherine does a double-take, at first, considering his skin tone -- and then rememebrs, again, where she is.

"Hi."

"Hey."

"Don't think we've met," she adds, "Pardon me. I'm Katherine. It's a terrible habit, just talking to people I don't know at all."

"Michael Guerin. Good to meet you."

"... I'm gonna guess you're either not from Earth or not from mine."

"Long story. I grew up in New Mexico, but I don't go back there anymore. Changed the skin just a couple of months ago."

"Grew up there." She notices the difference in wording, and grins. "But not from there."

"Not originally, no." He eyes her, amused. "Good catch."

"It's my job. Used to work in epidemic services, now I'm a psychotherapist. Most of my patients never actually want to tell me anything, so I've got to decode them."

"Cool. And, yeah. Where I'm actually from is where I live now."

"Nice to have somewhere to go home to, right?" She smiles, turning her head to the side a little.

Doesn't mean she doesn't.

Lies.

He smiles. "It is. Nice change, too."

"Didn't have anywhere, in New Mexico? -- you don't have to answer," she amends quickly.

"Places to live. Wouldn't call them homes." He shrugs.

"Not, perhaps, the right sort of people?"

Katherine can't help but be nosy, every now and then.

He doesn't really mind that much. Not here.

"Lived on my own since I was sixteen. Before that... yeah, he wasn't the right kind of person."

The psychotherapist in her is further piqued.

She's had all too many unfortunate experiences hereabouts.

"Let me guess. Child protective services, foster homes, the works."

"Yeah. Picked up in the desert when I was six, and I guess I just didn't get lucky."

"They're services that are supposed to help. But usually make things worse. Kind of like psychiatric institutes, which ... try, and that's unfortunately all I can say in their favor."

"Yeah, well. Whoever thought Hank made a good foster father needed their head looked at."

"Probably just wanted money." Katherine shakes her head. "Applying for emancipation was a smart move."

"Oh, I know he did. Three guesses what he wanted it for." He shrugs. "Didn't get emancipated 'til he threw me out."

"... drugs, booze, sex, I bet. All accurate guesses."

She sighs, again. "I live in Idaho. You'd think there's nothing there, but -- well,not so much. We have a lot of problems with child support issues."

"Yeah. I was better off without him, even if I couldn't stay in school."
