Merriman has settled into a chair near the fire, book in hand and the day's newspaper tucked under one arm. But the fire seems to be more interesting than the book, most of the time.

'Did your vicar pick any particular text for his service? I find that most clergymen feel somewhat constrained by the choice of text -- I would find it very surprising if it was not one of a half-dozen or so texts. Not that there is anything wrong with the half-dozen, of course, but it would be interesting to know if it was different.'
Their postures have not changed, the conversation continues as normal. It would take a very careful and attuned eye to know that they are not quite conversing on the level they were before.
