It was Kaylee's suggestion that the three of them -- River, Simon, and herself -- get some ice cream after dinner. Because Simon's been quiet (but jumped in a Simonesque fashion at the chance to head out for a little while with the two of them). And River's been a little down. And Kaylee quite frankly wants some ice cream. And ice cream, like pie, makes things better.
So the front door opens, and the three of them file in. River first, then Simon, and last Kaylee. Meaning to head for the bar.
And then they stop short.
A sharp intake of breath from Kaylee.
River is poleaxed.
Simon looks at them, and goes very very still. Not stiff; just still.
