[OOM: Previously, on Londinium.]

He'd had his weekly clinic visit and six-month checkup earlier today. He hadn't expected the news he'd heard.

("It's too early to know how long it'll last, Gabriel, but ... it looks like you're stabilizing."

"What?!? Vincent, are you sure?"

"I've always been a rational man, but this is nothing short of a miracle. I'd say you have something to celebrate.")

When Gabriel Tam walks into Milliways, he looks more than a little stunned... but he's smiling.

There comes a time in the life of a Lord of the andain where one has to make a choice.

That is why Galadan is currently dressed like a Rim-dweller from River and Gabriel's world. The andain of Fionavar are now in the good hands of Kevin -- Ceridwen's son -- just to set the fox (or in this case deer) in amongst the hens, and he is, perhaps for the first time in his entire existence, a free --

Let's call him a man.

The Tacitus is waiting just on the other side of the door. So one more drink, and then he'll take his leave.

It's been seven years since the passage of the IIGA. Seven years since the assassination attempt. Seven years since Vincent Navarro had given Gabriel Tam his professional medical opinion and warned him in no uncertain terms what the results of his remaining in office would likely be.

He doesn't regret his choice.

Still, things are becoming more difficult, these days. He does his best to cooperate with Navarro's continued recommendations, working with his ever-efficient assistant Mark Jiang to make time for the additional treatments and the now-compulsory pulmonary rehab sessions (which take place in his office, in secret, as much as possible), to listen to Regan and reassure her as much as he can. Even so, it's difficult sometimes. Today was one of the harder days - and there's still a dinner party to endure tonight.

Gabriel makes his way slowly into the bar and to an armchair seat by the fireplace. He'll just rest a bit here, before he goes. Just for a while.

Mal looking confused as hell. Milliways very rarely surprises Mal anymore - maybe it's something about his ma being Bartender here, or just the sheer length of time that he has been visiting the bar itself. Regardless, it is a choice for Captain Reynolds to visit the bar, rather than the other thing.

Except for today, when Mal pulls one of the curtains in Shuttle Two to the side and finds the sprawl of the main bar space instead of the floor space where he had thumped all his clothes on the floor last night.

"Huh. I get the hint."

[OOC: Open all day. I missed my captain. :)]

Today's session of the Council of Seven was both long and excruciatingly boring. By the time it's over, Gabriel is just grateful to escape the seemingly-endless discussions.

On impulse, he opens the door to Milliways before leaving his office for the evening. Perhaps unwinding over the paper and with a glass of his favorite whiskey will help wash away the taste of Parliamentary negotiations.

In a week's time, the Gryphons- the team of dancers to which Thalestris has been assigned- will travel to the great arena on the plain east of the Palace and see the bull-dance for themselves for the first time. That will mark a month spent in training, for them. Aktor the trainer does not allow anyone who has had less time to learn their new skills to see it done, for fear they'll lose their nerve.

He needn't worry about that with Thalestris, who has been doing everything in her power to hear of the dance from those in the Labyrinth longer than her, but the rule is the same regardless. A week; then they'll see.

For now, she practices. The other Gryphons do, too, everyone in the Bull Court does. But for days now Thalestris has not been able to rid her thoughts of the image of Theseus the Athenian soaring through the air on his leap from the Bull of Daidalos' horns. When they finally take their bull from the herd, if the gods or fate or whatever decides these things decrees her not a bull-leaper, it won't be because her skills are wanting. She'll be ready, indeed. So she practices whenever she can, to the point where it's near second nature to her to tumble or flip instead of merely walking.

Although the drop from the vaulting-horse seems rather longer than usual, this time...

Thalestris freezes. It seems the powers that control the strange wine-shop's appearance decreed that she flip over the vaulting-horse and tumble out of the place's rafters; she's in a perfect three-point landing on one of the tables, unsure of what to do next.

[OOC: If you want to interact with Thalestris, please check this note on her appearance first. Thank you.]

In a clear stretch of lawn outside Milliways' back door, three figures fade into sight.

One is River Tam, disheveled and only slightly blood-streaked, with guns on her hips and one arm looped around Galadan's waist.

The second is Mary Lennox, bearing several scrapes and scratches, a fading black eye, and a general air of scruffiness and stiffness.

And the third, of course, is Galadan who promptly collapses onto River's shoulder. (From the way River braces herself to catch his weight, she was expecting this. It's a good thing they're pretty much of a height.)

[After hearing Gabriel's bad news, River and Galadan waste no time in getting to work.

Nobody should be surprised to learn that a psychic gunslinger and the Wolflord of the andain are very, very good at quick reconnaissance.]

The really tricky thing about cross-universal dating is not whether or not you both use base ten to count dates and times. It isn't that one of you is deadly allergic to the proteins in that romantic dinner. It isn't even that you're technically on opposite sides of the law, though it is lucky alternate universes don't have extradition treaties.

It's that you're not sure whether Valentine's Day exists in that other universe. Or if it's like, a day for private contemplation of the martyrs. Chocolate and flowers, maybe not so appropriate in that case.

"But seriously," Duo asks the Bar. "Have they ever mentioned anything?" He frowns in consternation at the napkin he gets in reply. Apparently Serenity's crew isn't all that talkative about their romantic Valentine's escapades.

He's been enjoying these few days on Osiris with Regan. They'll be leaving for the Border and Rim in just over a week, but for now, it's very nice to be home.

Still, there are a few things that need doing before their departure. On a whim, Gabriel stops by Milliways this evening, hoping to steal an extra hour or two to do just that.

Besides, the whiskey at the end of the universe is exceptional.

He'd finished his review of the bills before Parliament earlier than he'd expected, and for once there hadn't been an evening engagement to attend.

As a result, Gabriel Tam is spending a free evening comfortably ensconced in an armchair by the Milliways fire, with a whiskey and the Londinium Times.

After receiving Simon's wave, Gabriel had immediately arranged with Mark to not only reschedule the previously-planned dinner engagement but also to clear the last meeting of the day from his calendar.

As a result, he's able to arrive at Milliways early.

(He's not worried. Not exactly. Still, requests like this from Simon are rare enough to make him wonder.)

Gabriel takes a seat in the armchair by the fireplace and requests a cup of coffee while he waits.

He's scheduled an appointment with Navarro for early next week. In theory, it'll be to receive confirmation from his doctor that his physical condition is up to what he's planning to do.

In reality, Gabriel Tam has already made his decision.

Now all that's left is to make certain arrangements, but that can wait until tomorrow. For tonight, he's settled comfortably by the fire in Milliways with a whiskey and the paper.

Gabriel Tam had been in a good mood, until he got to Milliways and spotted the notice on the announcement board.

Now he's seated in an armchair near the fire with coffee instead of whiskey, and looking rather thunderously displeased with the world in general.

Less work on Serenity this weekend than previous weekends.

Therefore, Kaylee's in the bar with something that looks perilously like manga. Also, a beer.

Fakir is slowly circumnavigating the bar, running his hands over the wood paneling on the walls. Perhaps there's a catch somewhere, and if he finds it, the door will open.

At a certain point, Fakir touches a painting of dogs playing poker. Nothing happens, except that a Saint Bernard in the painting leers at him. To be fair, Fakir has inadvertently groped the dog.

It'd been a whim, but when the idea struck, Gabriel immediately decided to follow through with it. After all, it's been a while since he's been to Milliways.

(Besides, the time difference will give him a much-needed chance to recuperate before the evening's events.)

When Gabriel Tam settles in the armchair by the fire, he's dressed very formally. It appears that even several hundred years after departing Earth, white tie is still the standard for certain state affairs.

Rose is being remarkably sulky today. After a quick dinner she went back out with Helen (limping a little) and now Susannah is in the bar--

The note had politely advised him that a meeting would be prudent, and Gabriel Tam learned some time ago not to disregard this particular individual's recommendations.

As a result, this evening finds him ensconced in one of the armchairs near the fireplace, reading a newspaper while he waits.
