(no subject)

Tim sprints out of the staff wing, a blue scrap of blanket thrown over one shoulder. He jumps onto a table in the middle of the bar, and begins speaking in a loud voice.

"And it came to pass in those days, that there went out a decree from Caesar Augustus, that all the world should be taxed. (And this taxing was first made when Cyrenius was governor of Syria.) And all went to be taxed, every one into his own city. And Joseph also went up from Galilee, out of the city of Nazareth, into Judaea, unto the city of David, which is called Bethlehem; (because he was of the house and lineage of David:) To be taxed with Mary his espoused wife, being great with child. And so it was, that, while they were there, the days were accomplished that she should be delivered. And she brought forth her firstborn son, and wrapped him in swaddling clothes, and laid him in a manger; because there was no room for them in the inn. And there were in the same country shepherds abiding in the field, keeping watch over their flock by night. And, lo, the angel of the Lord came upon them, and the glory of the Lord shone round about them: and they were sore afraid. And the angel said unto them, Fear not: for, behold, I bring you good tidings of great joy, which shall be to all people. For unto you is born this day in the city of David a Saviour, which is Christ the Lord. And this shall be a sign unto you; Ye shall find the babe wrapped in swaddling clothes, lying in a manger. And suddenly there was with the angel a multitude of the heavenly host praising God, and saying, Glory to God in the highest, and on earth peace, good will toward men. And it came to pass, as the angels were gone away from them into heaven, the shepherds said one to another, Let us now go even unto Bethlehem, and see this thing which is come to pass, which the Lord hath made known unto us. And they came with haste, and found Mary, and Joseph, and the babe lying in a manger."

And Then eh steps off, dropping into a seat, satisfied.

From her stool at the bar, Goldy gives a round of applause that just borders on sardonic golf-clapping.

"Very nice."

[identity profile] 3rdtimelucky.livejournal.com 2005-12-25 03:20 am (UTC)(link)
She picks her wine back up.

"No actual nativity play though. I must say that I'm a little disappointed. You'd make a good Melchior."

[identity profile] 3rdtimelucky.livejournal.com 2005-12-25 03:46 am (UTC)(link)
She chuckles. "Melchior was traditionally thought to be the second of the Magi. Bore frankincense."

[identity profile] 3rdtimelucky.livejournal.com 2005-12-25 03:52 am (UTC)(link)
"I suppose not. But a little background knowledge never hurt anyone."

Nodding at the tabletop he had narrated from. "Is that an annual thing you do?"

[identity profile] 3rdtimelucky.livejournal.com 2005-12-25 04:09 am (UTC)(link)
"Well, if you will go galavanting around outside of here, what can you expect?" she says wryly. "We're all slaves to time."

"And what about a reminder for non-Christians," she points out with a smirk. It's not like she cares, but she's in a feisty mood.

[identity profile] 3rdtimelucky.livejournal.com 2005-12-25 04:50 am (UTC)(link)
"You know this for a fact?" she asks.

[identity profile] 3rdtimelucky.livejournal.com 2005-12-25 04:59 am (UTC)(link)
Goldy nods, a little amused. "For a moment there I thought you had bona fide evidence."

[identity profile] 3rdtimelucky.livejournal.com 2005-12-25 05:13 am (UTC)(link)
"Fair enough," she says agreeably.

"I've studied the bible, but since I'm near-immortal and from a world where there were no deities, I like to entertain all possibilities."

[identity profile] 3rdtimelucky.livejournal.com 2005-12-25 05:18 am (UTC)(link)
"Not that I know of."

Quizzical look. "What has he got to do with it?"

[identity profile] 3rdtimelucky.livejournal.com 2005-12-25 05:33 am (UTC)(link)
"Well, there's a thing."

It seems unlikely to her, somehow.

"Why did it take so long for the movement to get founded? And why did it start in America, of all places?"

[identity profile] 3rdtimelucky.livejournal.com 2005-12-25 05:51 am (UTC)(link)
"There's a thing... that the LDS were right. It's just a turn of phrase," she advises. "There really were no ethereals in our Lands that I heard about."

"Maybe Snow could correct me," she says with a final shrug. Goldy deferring to Snow? Whatever. The remark is over-laden with sarcasm.

"Not especially."

She sups a little of her wine and considers lighting up again, rotating the pack of cigarettes where it lays on the bartop. She decides not to just yet.

"So what did you get me for Christmas?" she says with an innocent blink and a fake plastic smile of expectancy.

[identity profile] 3rdtimelucky.livejournal.com 2005-12-25 06:24 am (UTC)(link)
She laughs. "I was only teasing, Tim."

"Don't sweat it. I don't need anything."

[identity profile] 3rdtimelucky.livejournal.com 2005-12-25 06:42 am (UTC)(link)
She shakes her head vehemently.

"Forget it. Really, there's nothing," she says kindly but also solemnly.

Her Christmas has already been made by her sexual liaisons of the past few nights.

[identity profile] 3rdtimelucky.livejournal.com 2005-12-25 07:02 am (UTC)(link)
"Appreciated."

She leans back, satisified, then notices something slightly different about him. She's very observant. However, though she spots the lack wedding band, she's not going to bring it up at Christmas.

He pulls her eyes away and offers a thin smile, sympathetic and rueful. That's all.

...And in a corner, John rolls his eyes and mutters to himself, "and if you believe that one, pull the other, it's got bells on."
