Cooper has a map of Twin Peaks and the surrounding environs sitting on the table in front of him. Maps are a good thing to study.

Unfortunate, isn't it, that the map is not always the territory.

There is an absence of coffee.

Who am I trying to kid. Of course there's a cup of coffee. A damn fine one.

"The map?"

Damn. No humorous back and forth.

"It is?"

Maps...Cooper's kind of ambivalent about maps. They're tools. Things to be studied and taken into account.

He offers a hand.

"Jack bone, superhero."

Cooper eyes the hand.

And shakes. A little warily.

"Dale Cooper."

"Pleased to meet you dale."

He eyes the map again.

"You have the intense gaze of someone working a case."

"You have experience with this kind of thing?"

"My mentor is the greatest detective on my planet."

There is a grin.

"I picked up a lot."

"I'm not currently on duty." Cooper folds the map.

"Is one ever off duty?'

"By the rules of this establishment, yes."

A slight pause.

"Except here, you gain more time to work."

"No business in the bar," Cooper counters.

A breif nod.

"Right. Which means, if, say, Darth Vader and Luke Skywalker came in the bar, they wouldn't be allowed to bring in thier old issues, to set people after Vader simply because of what he did outside. Also, to prevent people like Satan from dealing in souls, here. Not, like, don't work on your business, or don't sell stuff."

"Assume that the rules are the United States Constitution," says Cooper. "That would make 'no business' an article. Is there any section below that article that clarifies that interpretation in that way?"

A shrug.

"Generally, yes. Just ask Bernard."

"I've made inquiries," says Cooper, "and different officials interpret the rules in different ways."

And certain officials are trusted more than others.

A tilt of the head.

"Yeh. That happens. But no one has cracked down on all the homemade businesses, have they? And I always see people doing work at the tables."

"I wouldn't know, and I'd prefer not to find out. It's better to be safe now than sorry later."

"Plus, you get all the people recruiting here."
