[OOM: Ray gathered up some friends and allies this morning, and they went to his world to Get Things Done.

Some of them had to rescue an entire submarine crew.

Some of them had to avert a human sacrifice.

And some of them just had to kick enormous amounts of ELDRITCH ASS.

In the end, some questions were answered... and some?

Some... weren't.]

It's Canada on the other side of the door. Ray pushes his way through, smelling of smoke and ozone and ... barbecue? Well, scorched meat, anyway. Among other more unpleasant things. He's got a large plastic bag slung over one shoulder, next to his proton pack; whatever is inside, it's got at least as many poky parts as an Alaskan king crab and it's as big as a good-sized dog. "Hi, Bar," he says. "Can I please have something really alcoholic? And a better means of transporting biological materials than a triple-layered Hefty bag?"

He gets a glass of something a distressingly opaque turquoise in color (Bar does not trust him with Atlantean) and a big cooler marked with the Biohazard FOR THE LOVE OF ALL THE GODS DO NOT TOUCH THIS BOX symbol.

"Thank you," says Ray, and heaves the Hefty bag into the cooler before sitting down to start in on the booze. "I appreciate it."

Some time later, he has a different visitor. This one is human.]

Holidays mean Kaylee gets to put things aside, just for a little while. New Year's is over, though, and it's back to work. Back to getting things done. Back to thinking about things -- including in-law problems.

Kaylee got angry at Gabriel Tam in large part to defend Dream.

And the thing is: she's of two minds. She knows -- knows -- that she doesn't have to do this. That it's probably pretty stupid to do this, and that if

(Simon)

anybody finds out about this, she's in trouble.

But she believes that Dream can't hurt her. And she does feel sorry for him. And she doesn't blame him.

And sometimes, people need to know that.

(She's very pointedly ignoring the knowledge, coming to her in Simon's voice, that Dream isn't a person. Strictly.)

Kaylee is bundled up, and she's got a flashlight, and her boots crunch in the snow as she goes out into the forest.

The woods are not safe. Even if you are the strongest of the strong, the woods are not safe. There are areas where the demon bunnies shy from, places where the Tofu Beast will not stride, grottoes which turn the nose of any preternatural being which happens on them.

The woods are not safe. Things walk in the dark depths which are not meant to come near the light, back where the trees become the dream of trees, the dreams of trees. The ground shakes under the feet of ancient dreams of beings gone before man opened his eyes.

The woods are not safe. If you walk deep enough into them you are in the Dreaming, and the subconscious of man is not a safe place to be. Not only Man populated the beings which dwell in the Dreaming, not only his fears stalk the darkness.

The woods are not safe. Daniel is not here. Morpheus is not kind, although he attempts not to be cruel. Nyarlathotep wishes to understand.

The woods are not safe. But sometimes safety is not an option.

The last few days on Serenity have been...stressful, to say the least. Kitty is in some place called Colorado, nobody knows anything, it's just a waiting game.

At least when it was Simon and River they had a goal in sight first thing off. This time...nobody can do anything. Yet.

When Simon and Kaylee come into Milliways, they're wearing coats, and they head for the lake door. Heading out for a short walk in the woods -- it won't fix anything, but it's good to keep moving. To get away for an hour or so. They don't talk much as they walk. Right now there's just not much to say.

The doorknob moved when the Brigadier tried it this morning. He didn't open the door just then- it was enough to know that a return was possible. First things first. Namely, breakfast (one can't face an unknown situation like what was supposedly unfolding in Devil's End on an empty stomach), and a spot of exercise outdoors. That ought to be quite enough to bring him back up to speed before returning.

Nothing is quite so irritating as being interrupted on your way back to headquarters by an emergency message from Sergeant Yates to the effect of "something dreadful happened in Devil's End last night, and the broadcast stopped midway through, also I took your helicopter, hope you don't mind".

.... save perhaps finding Milliways on the other side of the bloody door when you meant to take Yates to task instead.

"Blast it," the Brigadier mutters, and heads for the back door. He's going to need a walk somewhere a little less stricutred than this if he's to even out his temper at all.

[After they meet with The World's Oldest Waiter, Moiraine and Morpheus go...

Out of Milliways, and into Twin Peaks.

Where the Bookhouse Boys have been busy reading up on their Lovecraft. Ed Hurley and the Log Lady are waiting for Moiraine and Morpheus as they arrive, and with a smidgen of mild crime they make their way out to the woods.

Where Harry Truman & Co. are in some serious trouble of the Crawling Chaos variety.]

Annie Blackburne gets another visit from Dale Cooper.

[From here.]

"YES!"

And the scent of Napthalot, the sweet scent of Napthalot, a thick, heavy scent; nothing delicate about it, but nothing wrong either. It is something like the smell of artificial floral perfume; heavier, with bases of other things that change it and ruin the purity, but created with the intent to please, it floods the room.

Choking thick, strangling thick, and there is a swirl of black, and white, and RED even as too-sane laughter rips open the air.

And then the door closes.

So last week there was a mini-vacation, and it went well.

This week, therefore, there's Kaylee in the bar, with a cup of tea and a piece of paper and a pen. She's doodling idly, and cheerfully.

[After all of this.]

The mask of Caroline's face is still in Harry's office among the stacks and stacks of paperwork. But Cooper has the picture in his wallet, and right now it's out of his wallet, and in front of him on the table.

This is what we call a stolen moment: time taken to remember, and reflect, and wonder -- more time than waiting for an elevator provides.

He's sitting in a booth in the corner, with low lights and a cup of coffee, with the black and white portrait of Caroline, and wondering about her.

And about Annie.

That...that was a damn fine cup of coffee she made, earlier.

It's never a bad idea to hope.

Cooper has a map of Twin Peaks and the surrounding environs sitting on the table in front of him. Maps are a good thing to study.

Unfortunate, isn't it, that the map is not always the territory.

There is an absence of coffee.

Who am I trying to kid. Of course there's a cup of coffee. A damn fine one.

[Out of Milliways: Major Briggs has a bad feeling, and Harry Truman gets bad news.]

His black eye is fading, and the cut just under his eye is healing. On its own.

Cooper has a chess set at a table, and he's brooding over it.

If, of course, by 'brooding' you mean 'eyeing it while he drinks his coffee'.

[Out of Milliways: She's dead. Wrapped in plastic. Again.]

First things first: a cup of coffee. Cooper is tired, and it shows.

"It occurs to me," he says to Bar, "that it would be best if there was a way to carry around great quantities of coffee that wasn't a thermos. They get heavy, and are soon only good for blunt objects." Beat. "I'm thinking of a propane tank."

He'll retrieve his coffee, he'll nap for twenty minutes, and then it's back into town.

[personal profile] tibetanmethod
Getting a glass of warm milk from Milliways is both faster and cheaper than ordering it from room service. Cooper's a fan of this.

Cooper is also sitting in a booth, jacket off, collar undone.

It's the end of the day; he's winding down.

[personal profile] tibetanmethod
A small piece of paper rests on Bar.

It reads:

P to K-4

The paper is next to the (ubiquitous) cup of coffee, which is next to a tape recorder, which is next to a photograph of a small Mexican chihuahua.

Dale Cooper sits in front of all of these objects, looking thoughtful.
