One year ago, on this date, Sara was a crumpled sobbing mess on the lake shore, clutching a red spandex costume to her chest.

This year, she's not doing anything so dramatic.

A candle is lit and she stares out at the continuing destruction, almost entranced.

Sara is startled by the appearance of cookies and looks at the giver. A smile breaks out involuntarily.

Who could resist such an adorable sight? "Hi."

She gets a bounce and a wide grin in return.

"Hi. Are you magic?"

Well, it's like Narnia, right? There have to be some magical people.

"I'm afraid not, but some of my friends are." What? It's the truth! "My name's Sara. What's yours, sweetie?"

"I am Princess Sarah Marilla Lucy Pevensie Blythe," she declares proudly. Then she bounces eagerly. "You really know magic people?"

"Lots of different kinds of people come here." Shame Jack isn't around--he could pull an apple out of the air. "Where are you from, Princess Sarah?"

"That's ace."

She sits up a little straighter. "I'm from Hartford, Connecticut. And you can call me Rilla, everybody does, even Mom and Daddy, 'cause I won't answer if they call me other things."

"What other things do they call you?" Oh Sara, you will regret asking that question. "And thank you for the cookies."

That gets a deep breath and a thoughtful look.

"Sasha 'n little brat 'n stupid 'n lotsa things." Grin. "You're welcome, too. You looked sad, and cookies make me happy when I'm sad, so I brought them to make you happy."

Urge to kill: RISING.

"I appreciate that, Rilla. Want to have some with me?"

She was, quite obviously, just waiting to be asked. She crawls up onto a chair and grabs one.

"I woulda brought milk, but I couldn't carry it."

"That's okay--I think I can get us some milk." Not sure if the girl has noticed rats, she goes over to Bar, returning with a pitcher of milk and two glasses, one perfectly suited for small hands.

She has, actually. She just hasn't quite pieced together what they do, though she did try making friends with one. It quite liked that, I think.

Yay, milk! Once the milk is poured, she carefully sips it, making sure not to get a milk mustache.

It's one of the things she's trained herself not to do, it gets on Mom and Daddy's nerves.

"So what kinds of things do you like to do, Rilla?"

"I like to read, and go to school."

This cookie is very yummy.

"Reading is an awesome thing to do." Bibliophiles unite!

"My favorite book is Rilla of Ingleside. I finished it a couple months ago."

Yes, she's six. Yes, she's read a ridiculous amount of books for her age.

"Oh, that one is good. Have you read Anne of Green Gables?"

Sara was in the sixth grade when she was eight. Says it all.

That gets nods. "I read Anne and Rainbow Valley and Rilla. Miranda lost the other ones, though, so I haven't read them yet. What's your favorite book?"

"That's really hard for me to say. I love so many books." Seriously. She can't pick a favorite.

"I like lots of other books, too. Like A Little Princess and The Secret Garden and the Narnia books. The Anne books are my favorite, though, 'cause I haven't finished them yet."

She has logic, it's amazing.

"My favorites are the ones I can reread over and over again without ever getting tired." This girl is precious.

"I haven't read anything over again. There's too many books I haven't read!"

Absolutely precious.

"You want to know a secret? There are so many books in the world, you'll never run out."

"Not in my library, though. I've just got Miranda's old books."

She's like Matilda, in a way - she has to get books on her own, her parents don't care to get her any.

"Want some more milk?" Subject change designed to keep her Urge to Kill sense down.
