He wanders downstairs, contented smile on his face, new cat perched quite happily on his shoulder, steps easy and light. It's early, but he has a feeling that he's going to be put away tonight so he figures he'll have a little fun.
no subject
"Why, then, did LaCroix turn you? Or Nick-one... or whatever?"
"Thank you," he says as the glass returns.
"Meaning you may do or say something remarkably stupid or damaging without realizing it and people easily get angry with you?"
no subject
He sips his drink and pets his cat.
"And yes, that would be the problem. I try to be very specific in what I do, doing as asked and only that. I only want to make people happy, you understand; the two of us share this goal of ultimately doing more good than ill. It's just...sometimes people don't realize what they want...or mistake it. And that's where the trouble is, I'm afraid. LaCroix said that he wanted me to take charge one night, but when I did, he didn't like it very much. But can I be blamed for other's folly?"
no subject
"Well, then, people should take responsibility for their own actions."
He takes a quick look around the bar.
"Where's Natalie?" Nick hasn't mentioned her in a while...
no subject
"She's in her room resting. She's fine, I assure you. I wouldn't be here talking to you if she were in trouble."
no subject
no subject
"Not really. I was just letting you know. I don't get to deal with Natalie much. She's the one who puts me away, so when I see her, it usually means Nick comes out. But I love her all the same."

And he plays with the cat.
"And by 'put away', I mean that she switches us back. At her word, Nick returns to being the way you know him as being."
no subject
He sips from his glass. He's paying attention, taking it all in - something may come in handy at some time, but he doesn't want to appear to be 'studying' or 'researching'. Just conversing.
"Who kept you from becoming an ex-Nick-one and Nick-two?"
no subject
And he grins. Cause it's a joke.

He could be discussing a coffeetable for all his tone has changed.

That little pause seemed rather amused.
no subject
"You don't believe Van Helsing's moral reasoning is just?"
Yes - b/c a guy who runs around chopping other people's heads off should be talking about morality all over the place.
no subject
"I don't believe in morals. I've seen and felt and experienced too much. Nick, however, has a boundary there. I don't even understand it, let alone have them myself. I take care of those I care for...and everyone else is of little to no concern."
no subject
"How is it, then, that you care enough about Van Helsing that you would, if he didn't stop you, kill for him?"
no subject
"I care for him. He is a good friend. You too are a good friend, though a mischievious one. Not as good as he, perhaps, but a good friend. I'm really very friendly, Connor. It's very hard to get on my bad side. I suppose what I should have said is that everyone is quite safe...until they give me a reason to consider them as not my friend. Till they give me a reason to consider them of little to no concern."
no subject
"I'm as good a friend as I care to be."
And he leaves that statement at that - what? see above...
no subject
Which is said pleasantly. Then again, there is also an unspoken ending to that phrase which seems to recommend that he not do so in the future.

Yeah. Right.

"Enemies are frequently easier to locate than friends."
no subject
no subject
"Not so. If your enemies seek you out, no matter your mindedness or temper, they may be frequently more often found than your friends. 'Tis a fact of life."
He nods at the waitrat who has brought him another drink, takes a sip and continues:
"Don't get me wrong, I value my friends more than my own life, but I come across enemies more often than friends."
