David walks into the bar. ~~You think he'd have seen it.~~ He goes to the buffet table, fills up a plate, and sits down at a table with a notebook and a pen and is lost deep in concentration, writing.

If anyone should approach him, they'd probably need to poke him to get his attention.

Bartleby turns around and... you know what? The whole grudge-thing just isn't worth it.

"An apology would be good."

"I'm sorry. I don't have words for how sorry I am.

"Just... sorry."

His eyes say more than his mouth can.

"Is this going to be another truce, then?" Bartleby looks indifferent.

"Not a truce. A promise. A friendship.

"Something I can abide by."

"Only you aren't exactly the most trustworthy person."

"You'd be surprised how trustworthy I can be, when I know there's something worthy on the line."

"I'm sure I would be surprised. Because from where I'm standing? The answer is 'not very'."

"Give me a chance, then."

Bartlrby scrubs a hand across his face. "Yeah. A chance."

"A last chance then, Angel."

"Something along those lines, yeah."

"I betray it this time, I never expect you to speak to me again."

Not an ultimatum. A promise.

"Normally I'm all about forgiveness. But this time. Yeah."

He doesn't smile. This is all-or-nothing.

"Thank you."

"Yeah."

"So... all is said and done. Let's try civility. How have you been?"

"Good. Happy. And you?" Bartleby can do civility. He can.

"Very few complaints, really. Wouldn't say I was happy, but at least I'm not sitting in the sun, trying to kill myself, you know?"

David can do happy. He CAN.

"Yeah. Good."
