The dilemma of the high school wizard: tedious physics homework, or tedious physics wizardries?

Nita is sitting at a table, gazing undecided between her manual and her textbook.

Eventually, manual wins (lunch hours are for homework, right?). She pulls out a notebook and pen, and starts making notes in the Speech. Occasionally she refers to the manual, bringing up this diagram in 3-D or checking that conjugation.

"Good busy, bad busy, or just busy?"

A shrug. "Honestly, I'm not up to much. Just some routine work and high school."

Jack shrugs. "The reasons for the busy, I could do without. With everything that's gone on, there's quite a few businesses that want us to evaluate their security. Those that are staying in L.A. at least."

She knows a little of what happened. Not all, but enough to go on.

"But that's not dangerous busy, right?"

Jack gives her a slight, reassuring smile. "No. Just picking-up-the-pieces busy."

"Okay. Because you have no right to lecture me on not getting myself blown up if you're not taking your own advice."

Because he's always done that in the past!

"Mmmm-hmm. So how's your family doing? I met your dad in here a while ago, by the way."

She grins. "You did? They're good.

". . . My life is boring. Sheesh." She holds up a hand. "Give me a minute to savor it."

"Yeah, I know the feeling. Enjoy it while you can," Jack says, with a bit of a laugh. "It never seems to stay quiet for long."

"You're telling me."

"Sure we're not somehow actually related?" he asks, wryly.

"That would hurt my head a lot," she tells him, solemn, "so I'm voting no."

"What, you don't want me as some long-lost uncle?"

She considers. "Second cousin?"

"I don't even know my second cousins, so I'm not sure that would fit."

"Sure it would! It would fit the long-lost thing perfectly."

"Though my family isn't prone to having a lot of siblings on either side. Besides, if we were related then you really would be stuck with me," he says, with a small smile.
