The dilemma of the high school wizard: tedious physics homework, or tedious physics wizardries?

Nita is sitting at a table, gazing undecided between her manual and her textbook.

Eventually, manual wins (lunch hours are for homework, right?). She pulls out a notebook and pen, and starts making notes in the Speech. Occasionally she refers to the manual, bringing up this diagram in 3-D or checking that conjugation.

There is a girl watching Nita from a table not so far away.

She holds herself almost unnaturally still, and her stare is very intent.

She also does not often look away.

In the middle of a knotty bit of equation writing, Nita looks up, frowning, and catches the other girl's eye.

That's . . . a little unsettling, but considering Milliways, not that weird.

She raises her eyebrows in a question.

X just tilts her head fractionally, looking from Nita to her writing.

"It is Arabic?"

It looks like it is, at least. Though if it is, Nita is reading gibberish.

"Not quite. It's the Speech -- universal language. Wizards like me use it for spellwork."

X's eyes narrow fractionally.

"Magic?"

Like the man outside?

"Wizardry," she corrects. "It's . . . more scientific."

X goes a little stiff.

"Genetics?"

Sandry has made a quick trip out of doors and come back in again, looking perplexed. And shifting just a bit uncomfortably from foot to foot.

She's embarrassed to ask, but it's becoming a bit of an emergency situation. And the girl at the nearby table looks as if she might not mind pointing a new patron in the right direction.

"Um, pardon me," she asks, trying ot keep her voice low. "Can you tell me where the privy is?"

She looks up and grins.

"New, huh? They're over there."

A quick look at the girl's dress, and she adds, "The plumbing might be a little unfamiliar, but I think there are some old-fashioned stalls."

Sandry is surprised to be pointed to a door that clearly leads to an indoor room. But she reminds herself that and indoor privy is hardly the strangest thing she's been exposed to here.

Besides, she's rather at 'any-port-in-a-storm' point.

"Thank you. May I leave this here with you?" she asks, holding up her work basket.

Heaven only knows what is behind that door, and she doesn't want anything to happen to it.

"Sure." She pats the table. "I'm not going anywhere soon."

"Thank you," Sandry says again, quickly setting down her basket and hurrying (in as lady-like a manner as she can manage) to the door the girl had pointed out.

Hey, when you have to maneuver a noble's mourning dress, time can be of the essence.

Sandry returns a short time later, looking fairly impressed with what she found behind yon door.

"Thanks," she says a third time. Now that she's more at ease, she adds with a smile, "I really should have introduced myself--I'm Sandry."

"No problem. I've been there."

She offers a hand. "Dai'stiho. I'm Nita."

There's a familiar face at her elbow a few minutes later. "Hey, Nita. Not working on saving the world again, are you?"

She looks up.

"How am I supposed to answer that one?"

She's beaming.

"With a 'no, everything's perfectly peaceful and there's no chance I'm going to get myself blown up or do anything self-sacrificing anytime soon'," he says, smiling. "How're you doing?"

"Everything is peaceful and I'm not planning on getting blown up anytime soon," she recites obediently. "Promise."

Her smile brightens. "I'm good. Things -- are good."

If still uncertain, where certain people are concerned.

Yes.

"How're you?"

"All right. Busy, outside." Security is probably one of the only sectors to see record booms in Los Angeles at the moment. "Work, house-hunting... What are you up to?"

"Good busy, bad busy, or just busy?"

A shrug. "Honestly, I'm not up to much. Just some routine work and high school."

Laini has some of her own work, a couple tables over. This is not to say that she is procrastinating by people watching. Nita happens to be one of those people.

"Just be sure you don't hand that in as your homework- might explode your poor teacher's head." Amused.

She glances up, and grins.

"It would not! That would violate the Oath."

"Even if it was Totally by Accident?" Laini giggles.

"Or not making his brain explode, but just make his eyes cross and debate his sanity for a while? Not like I ever did things like that to my teachers, so I wouldn't know, of course."

The picture of innocence, she is. Complete with a halo.

She snickers. "Debating sanity might be okay. In the gray area, anyway."

"Though they thought the same with spiking brownies in the 1970s."
