In light of the latest wave of new arrivals (Random has spotted the pattern, have you?) the King of Amber is out on a couch, doing his paperwork and whistling, ready to give directions or explanations, or just generally be normal at anyone who comes by looking new.

He has a lot of fun playing the comforting, friendly type.

"A little place called Amber."

A small, all sorts of hidden-meanings-smile.

Random of Amber. Right.

He's got a great smile.

She tilts her head slightly.

"Care to elaborate?"

"All roads lead to Amber, dad used to say. It's the layer on top of this one, as it were. Affectionately, if misleadingly, nicknamed the perpendicular universe."

She thinks this should surprise her more than it does, but, hey, it's Milliways. Strange is the new normal.

She lifts her mug and takes a sip of coffee.

"Does it work like a parallel universe? Is everything there basically the same but ... not?"

Questions like these even make sense here. Sort of.

"Not quite. It's really very complicated, and it's kind of my job. I'd rather not think about it."

He shrugs.

"I'm king there."

"Oh, sorry — "

Then her contrite look is replaced with surprise.

"King?"

He should hang out with Teja.

He does!

"Recently crowned. Weird, huh?"

EEE!

"Congratulations." Beat. "Not weird — just a little different from my world."

"Well, worlds are always different," he reasoned, "this is pretty weird. No one saw it coming."

She raises an eyebrow.

"Including yourself?"

"Absolutely. Fluke fate decision. Unicorn appearing from sky and dropping down in front of me."

Crazy!

"And me, the youngest and shortest in the family."

She can't tell if he's serious about the unicorn.

"Well, you can compensate with your new title."

... She belatedly wonders if cheek earns beheadings in Amber.

"That's the plan."

And it's worked so far.

"Actually, dad was tyrant, so I'm working at 'fair and respected.'"

Tyrant?

Well, that could makes things a little ... awkward.

"How's that going so far?"

"Pretty well."

He's happy with it, anyways.

"It helps that there's just been a war."

"Good. That's — "

Her eyes widen almost imperceptibly.

"Is everything all right? Getting back to normal?"

Or whatever passes for normal in Amber, anyway.

"Everyone's pulled together some."

And that's making his job a lot simpler.

She nods.

"War has a tendency to do that."

"And it was a big family, and we were all at odds, but we are a family."

So that's helped, too.

A line appears between her brows.

"Was this a civil war?"

Three cheers for oxymorons.

"Not quite. More biblical."

Order versus chaos, and so on.

"Biblical," she echoes. "Oh."

The 'wow' is implied.

[ooc: And, must be lame and hop away from the computer for a while; slowtime okay?]

"What can you do?"

[ooc: slowtime is fine! Or we could probably fade]

"Exactly," she replies with a wry half-smile.
