Hagrid is happy.

Why is Hagrid happy?

He has his friend Stampy the tinyphant with him today, for a romp outside!

They are currently playing fetch with one of Stampy's squeaky toys and keeping a sharp look out for birds. Come and say hello and offer Stampy treats!

What's more shocking, the size of the man, the size of the elephant or the combination?

Or maybe it's that Gibbs is no longer quite so shocked by such things.

It's both!

Stampy keeps returning the squeaky toy to Hagrid, who then sneaks him a treat from one of his pockets.

Stampy spots the other, smaller man and runs over to him to investigate.

"Is that an elephant? I always thought they were bigger." He doesn't mention how large the man is. That seems a bit obvious.

"They usu'ly are. This one's special--pet o' Mike and Indy...someone made 'im for them, I think. Sweet natured, though, an frienly. Mos' elephants get 'bout this high."

He indicates shoulder level with himself for reference, being twelve or so feet tall, and African elephants only getting about eleven feet.

"Yes, er, I thought so." Gibbs looks up again. "And you're taller than an elephant." Joshamee Gibbs, master of the obvious!

"Yeah, but I'm small fer a giant, if that makes yeh feel any better...I'm on'y half-giant. Got me a half-brother almos' twice as tall as me, and he's small, too."

Stampy isn't sure what to thing of the smell of rum permeating the air and is thoroughly sniffing the newcomer in impolite places.

Gibbs swats at the tinyphant. "If ye're looking for snacks, I don't have any!

"You're half a...where's the other half?" Now he's beginning to find matters shocking.

Hagrid soothes Stampy when he scoots quickly away from the smelly man, and gives him another piece of red licorice.

"Me mum was a giantess, and me dad was a normal wizard. Grawp an' me have the same mum, but his dad is a giant."

"Ah. Of course." A beat. "What do you mean by wizards." Giants he can understand. The Bible mentions giants. But wizards? That's magic! And thus, bad luck.

"Like normal folk, but they kin do magic. I'm a wizard meself, but not a very good one. I got expelled from Hogwarts when I was on'y a secon' year. Been tryin' ter learn, but it's slow goin'."

"And why would you want to do magic? Magic's dangerous and unnatural. Folks get in trouble when there's magic." Usually they get in trouble by being chased zombies and fishpeople and the like.

"Folks get in trouble no matter wha' they do. It's as natural as kin be! We're born magic, an' magic kids who don' learn how to use it end up in more trouble if they can' control it."

Gibbs looks confused. Which is also natural. "What do you mean born magic?"

Teja is taking a break from his forge work when he sees them.

The animal looks like an elephant, on an old mosaic or fresco showing exotic beasts in the Roman circus. However, before this, Teja had assumed elephants were somewhat larger. Hannibal's army could have carried these all the way over the Alps, easily!

A new person!

Stamp drops his squeak toy and trumpets excitedly as he trots over to investigate. Hagrid follow along at a more sedate pace, ready to intervene if anything goes awry.

There is much sniffing of the new man as Stampy circles him.

Teja stands very still as the small animal -- truly an elephant? -- approaches him. It is too small to be harmful, so he doesn't regret having left axe, armour and cloak in the forge.

But he keeps an eye on the creature all the time as it circles him.

"Hope he ain't botherin' yeh; he's a curious little one. He don't bite or nothin'."

Hagrid is smiling politely, though it's hard to tell by looking at him.

"I'm Hagrid, an' that there is me friend, Stampy."

"Greetings," Teja says. "I am Teja."

He is too absorbed with the small creature to use the usual long version of his introduction.

"This is not an elephant, is it?"

"yeah, sort of. He's a tiny version o'one. He belongs ter Mike an' Indy, and I'm just bringin' 'im out fer a romp. Most elephants're bigger."

He makes a hand gesture indicating a height at approximately shoulder height with himself.

"Oh," Teja says. "I thought so -- yes. How did he become so small?"

"I think it's just how he was made. Someone made 'him fer Mike, I think, and I don' 'spect he's goin' ter grow any bigger."

"How can anyone make a living creature?" Teja asks, astonished. "Even magic would not create life, one would assume?"

"Well, I seen magic turn non-livin' stuff inter livin' creatures, but I dunno tha' they stay tha' way permanently. Maybe they jus' shrunk a normal sized elephant?"

He scratches his head as Stampy runs back for his squeaky toy and drops it at Teja's feet hopefully.

"Yeh'd have ter ask Mike, I reckon."

"He is the main tavern-keeper, is he not?" Teja asks, bending down to pick up the toy.

"Would I throw this, as one does for a dog?" he asks, looking up at Hagrid.

He is so fascinated by the smallness of the elephant, he hardly notices how big and tall the man is.-

"That'd be him."

Stampy trumpets indignantly. She apparently doesn't like being compared to a dog!

"If yeeh throw it, she'll bring it back to yeh. I usu'ly give 'er a treat fer it, though Mike an' Indy don' like 'er ter have too many sweets."
