Ka-thunk!

Tap!taptaptaptap

Outside a handful of paces away from the door a soccer ball pounces off the wall of the bar, bouncing back a few paces only to be kicked right back against it again; all the spots landing within the same location every turn. Lucas never played the sport in college- he was to busy competeing with Merle in track and sometimes fencing events. Mostly track though. Heck! Both of them had even made it to the Olympic trails until they quit.

The Prince snorted a laugh as he kicked the ball again with another ka-thunk against the wooden wall. It would have been interesting to see where they both would have placed had they actually gone through with it. But for now he can only dream of it as he kicks the black and white ball off the wall.

Anyone care to join him?

Teja has been walking around the lake, and now returns to the bar, astonished to see a man try and do damage to the bar with a strange sort of missile.

Coming closer, he realises it is simply a ball. It is still a rather hefty one, and Teja stops, watching the man at his rather fierce sport.

Teja never laughs!

He just looks down at the young man with faint amusement.

"That was not planned, one would assume?"

"I would not be able to distinguish between those games," Teja says. "I died in the year 552 of Christian reckoning."

"Ahhh," Teja says. "You would be but newly come to this place. There is a number of dead men here, and they seem as if alive again. We are merely told that, should we visit another world for a greater length of time, we would fade to a ghost."

Pause.

"I am Teja, son of Tagila; I was the last king of the Ostrogoths in Italy."

"I was a fighter, and a leader of men, all my adult life," Teja says, recognising the honest enthusiasm for what it was. "King I was only for three last, desperate months of inevitable defeat. Yes, I commanded armies. And I fought in the front, unlike the general of our enemies, Narses, who would hide in tents, on hills, and in litters. I never saw him."

"Oh, I was, where fighting was concerned," Teja says. "I as leading my former equals, after all. I am dark, different and lonesome only when not called upon by duty."

"Indeed, there are," Teja says. "I have met the famous Roman general Mark Antony, the Spartan king Leonidas, and, more recently, Attila the Hun. There are a number of Greek goddesses here, too."

"Oh, in my world, there were no gods," Teja says. "But there are worlds where they are real."

Pause.

"Would you ever have heard of Plato's Parable of the Cave?" he then asks. Just because this man would train with a ball does not mean he would be uneducated. Teja had been educated, for a man of his time and people, and he was training at arms every day, still.-
