Making his way to the target range through the jungle canopy was just a little too Viet Cong meets Tarzan for Gordon's tastes today. When he made his way back indoors he opted to take some time to make his next visit to the range worth all the fuss and bother- it's modding time. He might as well put the welding skills he learned for the bicycle to good use.

One almost-redheaded guy in nerd glasses and circled-lambda T-shirt doing terrible, terrible things to an unsuspecting Combine pulse rifle, over by the Window.

"It's all right," says Gordon. "People find out eventually anyway. Alien invasions, two of them, one partly successful, one completely. I was at ground zero for the first one. Up to my eyes in dealing with the aftermath of the second now."

"Aliens," Kim repeats. "Um, by any chance -- do you know a guy named Mulder?"

Gordon thinks for a moment, then shakes his head. The name's not ringing any bells.

(If pressed, he might conceivably recall seeing an episode of the X-Files once. He turned it off around the time the hospital personnel told Scully in horrified whispers that they had treated fourth and fifth-degree burns. But that's it.)

"From what he said, I think he knows about that sort of thing," she tells him. "Figured it was worth checking."

"Unless he referenced either Xen or the Combine, he wouldn't be from my world," says Gordon. "Or the Universal Union. But that's just another name for the Combine."

She shakes her head.

"Sorry, no. I don't recognize any of those."

"didn't think so," Gordon says. "Probably just as well. My world's kind of the pits right now."

"I'm sorry to hear that," Kim says, gently.

For all that it might be a platitude, the sympathy is real.
