Miss Katherine is outside the bar today, collecting leaves. She has never seen color like this before, and she imagines her children would get a thrill out of the fall foliage if she brings a few leaves back with her to her schoolhouse.

Whenever she's able to get back to her schoolhouse, that is.

She's strolling leisurely, a light wool shawl around her shoulders. There is a cool breeze, but the sun is warm, and every now and again you can see her tip her chin into the warm light, drawing in a deep breath, and letting the faintest of smiles grace her sad face.

Distractions are welcome.

"Yes, ma'am," he says, deciding not to bother correcting her. "The bar was inside the front door of my house."

"It does tend to sneak up on you," she sighs, with a patient smile. "At least it's a rather welcoming place."

"It sure is," he agrees. "The bar has baseball stuff!"

That's a pretty important detail for Arnold.

Katherine chuckles.

"Does it? I'm afraid I haven't come across any, myself."

"Well, you have to ask, but it gives real baseballs."

He looks more than a little excited about this. "And it gave me a soccer ball, too. This place is fun."

His enthusiasm is catching. She chuckles lightly.

"You're a fan of athletics, then? Are there many other young ones around here you can play with?"

"There's lots of older kids. Nobody my age so far." But that's okay, because older kids wanting to play with him is awesome.

"I hope the older kids treat you right," she smiles. She knows how boys can get, around that age.

"You let me know if you ever organize a game," she winks conspiratorially.

Because fine, long skirts and dainty hands just scream sports fan.

(But she'll surprise you.)

"They're great, they know all kinds of cool games."

Also, that wink earns her a gigantic grin. "You play baseball?"

Hey, his Grandma plays in a granny dress and wins. It takes a lot of weirdness to phase Arnold.

She chuckles at his obvious enthusiasm.

"Not proper baseball, no. I'm afraid I'm a bit too rural for that. But I have tried my hand at a few games such as that before.

"I'm a teacher, too, which allows me time to play with my children, when they'll have me," she grins.

"Oh, all I play is street ball. It's more fun that way."

He grins, too. "You must be the coolest teacher ever!" Arnold's wouldn't even go outside with them to recess, probably.

She laughs at that, and it's a bright laugh. Much brighter than she's been able to manage in several long days.

"I'm not sure if I'd go that far, but my students haven't sent me home yet, so I'd say I'm doing fairly well," she chuckles.

She's still young herself, with a fiery spirit hidden under her proper attire.

"You'll have to teach me how to play!"

"A teacher that plays sports? That's pretty awesome." he insists.

"It's really easy, you'll catch on quick! We can play by the lake!"

He's already planning an epic game involving pretty much every person he's met in the bar.

She smiles.

"Sounds good to me," she says, eyes beaming.
