Alice Cullen entered Milliways with a knowing smile. Futures shifted when she chose this door (the door to a closet in their hallway) and she knew she'd be here.

And on her own this time! She'd only ever come with Edward but hey! What's the worst that could happen? After all, she's a Cullen and she's brave. She survived so very long on her own.

Bravery, however, doesn't cover the awkwardness of ordering a glass of blood from Bar. Luckily, it comes in a plastic cup that isn't clear. She'd not want to subject the rest of the bar to that.

"Oh, Jenny." Alice beams. "Shopping will be fantastic."

"Just tell me when!"

"Absolutely." Alice nods. "I'll get a weekend that won't coincide."

"Time spent here doesn't affect time spent in your home world."

"I know. But I'd rather not leave my family in the lurch, even if time stopped. I would be distracted otherwise."

Cue confused look.

"Just events I should be around for." Alice shrugs. "I would be so annoyed to leave halfway through them."

"Is that a normal part of having a family?"

"Being there, no matter what?" Alice smiles patiently. "Of course. I would not leave my brothers, sister, parents or husband to deal with something if I had a choice."

Except her father left her. He didn't stay long enough. He left. Jenny chews on her lower lip for a couple of seconds, thinking on this with a small (pained) frown.

"I'm trying to do that. I'm trying rally hard."

And she's determined.

"I can see that." Alice smiles kindly. "It gets easier. I waited for years to find my husband, and then my family. So many years. My past is...not happy and just being able to help my family, to be able to help them. You'll do well. I can see that much."

"I like helping mine, even if..."

Even if most of them won't be around for long in the scheme of things.

A shrug. "It makes me feel good."

"Yes. It's supposed to." Alice reaches over and gets her cup of blood, dipping a finger in to feel its rather frigid temperature and sets it back on the bar.

She watches for a moment. Then: "...can I try a sip?"

Alice raises her eyebrows. "It's cold. And I do not think you would like it."

"I'm still curious."

It still defines the majority of Jenny's actions.

"I don't want anymore, so I can't stop you." Alice wrinkles her nose. "But...cold."

Jenny takes a sip anyway, licking at her lips to try to get the full taste.

"There's a lot of iron," she says, wrinkling her nose. "And... and not enough sugar. But a lot of water. I... I don't think I imagined that."

"It's filling." Alice shrugs, a bemused smile crossing her lips. "Oh, Jenny. Such a curious soul."

"It's a direct source of nutrients no matter what," she responds. "Your species is efficient with that."

"That is one way of putting it."

"It's good. I like efficiency."
