Demeter has spent many of the past days in the infirmary watching over Carlotta and she's taking a small break over by the fire.

Her legs are curled up under her and she's staring into the fire, thinking about what Kore was like when she was that young though her hair was never quite that curly.

"Ow." He's imagining how bad the injury must have been. "That sounds brave of her. But she seems kinda fearless. Circus kids must all be like that."

"She has a very good heart and she's quite comfortable around horses. I think it was just horribly unlucky but she's getting better."

"And really lucky she managed to get here from 1940-whenever. And that your boyfriend is a surgeon." Knox only knew that Malcolm was a shrink till now.

"Yes, though I'm not sure how much of it was luck, I'm just glad it was possible."

"I'm glad she's okay. Not that I wouldn't be glad that she wasn't if I didn't know her. But since I do..."

"I'm sure she'd love some more visitors."

"I'll look for her, then. And see about having Raps visit, too.

"Think she'd like a gift?"

"Oh, I know she would."

"Any hints? I'm not good with girls that age." Unless the girl in question is half alien and smarter than he'll ever be.

"Something delicious to eat and a book or a small game to keep her busy as she heals."

"How is she about pie?" Somewhere in the Barman's quarters, Mike's pie senses must be tingling.

"She really enjoys it."

"Then I am gonna talk to Mikey. I'm doing some work for the Bar, and he's paying me in pies.

"Though given the worthy cause, I bet he doesn't include this on the account." Assuming Mike has a system for such a thing.

"Carlotta is definitely a worthy cause and perhaps you could find something fun for her to read too."

"Guess I can just go into a Waldenbooks and ask what girls are reading.

"Or maybe not, since she's from the 40s." And from a world with World War II. "I don't suppose you have any suggestions?"

"Find her a book about horses since I think that would make her smile."

"Like National Velvet and not Secretariat." He used to bet on the horses.

"Exactly, I think she'd enjoy that."

"I will do that.

"Thanks for letting me know about Carlotta." And with that, he decides to let Demeter go back to her fire and he goes back to his letters.

"Thank you for thinking of her and be well."
